18 Sept 2020 · 11 min
Paul Colligan breaks down the "who versus how" mindset for podcasters: stop trying to learn every technical detail yourself and instead find the right people to handle production, strategy, and platform management. The scorecard ranks creators from DIY learners to fully outsourced operations, with real examples like directory submissions and project management.

When Joe Polish asked me if I want to be part of the new podcast he was going to be doing with Dan Sullivan from strategic coach called 10x talk, I jumped at it. Joe Smart. Dan Smart. Genius Network, really strong group. Strategic Coach, really strong group. And I got to be in the middle of it. That's one of the really cool things about being a podcaster is this exposure to these really good ideas and these really smart people. How well has this done for Dan? Well, since then, dan now manages 11 podcast head out to strategicpodcast.com, you can see all of the ones that he's involved with. And of course, the issue is he doesn't manage 11 of them. He's just in 11 of them because he realizes the power of it, but he knows how to leverage it. And that is a bit what I want to chat about today. We are on a series about the podcast partnership, Mindset Scorecard. Now, we're currently on point four of the Mindset Scorecard. And if you want to get yours, head out to headsuptuesday.com that is the weekly heads up newsletter. And when you sign up, we give you information on how to get the scorecard and a number of other things. And if you don't want to get the newsletter, hit unsubscribe. I only want people on the newsletter who want to be on the newsletter. This is just the easy way for you to get it anyway. Mindset Scorecard. Eight things that we are doing, eight mindsets that we have internally on how we produce podcasts, what is important to us, what we believe is important to our clients so that we don't get in the communication of other podcast consultants and groups. How cheap can you edit a podcast? And what hacks can you do to get me up in itunes or whatever? We have these eight mindsets really key to us. Last session we chatted about the role of podcast technology and how important that is to us in our mindset. And number four is the idea of who versus how. That's number four on the Mindset Scorecard. Now, who versus how comes from a book, believe it or not, by Dan Sullivan of Strategic Coach who Not how, a concept that he's been working with that he's actually launching into a major market book that comes out in the next month or so. And the concept is really not that complicated. If you want to see true growth, if you want to do really well, it's not how do I get this done? Because you only have so many hours in the day, there's only Many things you can do in the day, but who is the right person to get this done for me? Plenty of people launch their own podcast. We're not the only ones who are managing podcasts out there by any means. But if it's a question of will someone train me how to do that, Will someone show me how to do that? That's not what we're here for. And great places to go, people we can recommend you to. But if you're looking for the who to do it, that's what we are and that's the place that we play. And not just the who of who's going to tell me what microphone to buy, but who's going to tell me how to think through strategies? Who is going to make sure that we're tracking on what it is that we're trying to get done? Who's going to run the numbers to make sure that this is done well? Who is going to have my back? I think what's interesting at the week that I recorded this, Amazon just launched their podcast directory. Amazon pretty big. The A L, E X A. I won't say her name out loud because there's one right there and she'll start talking to me. But the fact of the matter is this is a huge directory. This one's really important. And on the day of launch, less than 10% of the podcasts at Apple were in the Amazon directory because, you know, people weren't paying attention. You know, people read a book from a little while ago or, you know, found out how to put things at their host or how to put things at a certain place. You know, not a who, not someone looking after them. So who versus how, that's what I want to chat about today. And as with all elements of the mindset scorecard, there are four levels. There's the 1, 2, 3, where you're far away from us. There's the 4, 5, 6, where you're starting to get closer. There's the 7, 8, 9, where you know you're definitely on your way. And then there's the 10, 11, 12 where you and I are thinking the same way. And again, no mindset's wrong. It's just, it's not a good match if we don't have the same mindset. So the who versus how on the 1, 2, 3, I don't know how to do this. I'm sorry if I don't know how to do this. I can never make sure it's done properly. Project is too important to not know. And there's some people who are there. You know, I think of Joe Rogan. When Joe Rogan launched his podcast, he wanted to know the mic. He wanted to know rss, he wanted to know all these things. He was not looking for the who at that point. He was looking for the how. And there are some people want to do that. That book back there on the shelf, how to Podcast, it's not bad, but we're not here to show you the how. So if you don't know how to do this, you'll never make sure it's done properly. If that's where you're thinking, that's where you're going, then you want to how to podcast course, that kind of thing on the 4, 5, 6. I'm good with having others do the work for me, but I need to keep them close. Not necessarily a bad thing in life. The question is, how close does that need to be kept? At what point does trust come into play and you're at a good place? I think of my bookkeeper, Neil. Hey, Neil. If you're listening, Neil does my books and Neil makes sure that the taxes are paid on time and that the fees and whatnot goes out. I'm not on top of Neil because Neil is my who. I actually took accounting in college and I. Well, let's be honest, I flunked it and I'm just not the type of guy to do the bookkeeping. So Neil's my who. I could spend all day studying the how of all this, but the fact of the matter is my who and I'm at a good place in the 789. Outsourcing podcast works makes logical and financial sense to me. That's the beginning of the step in the right direction. And that is a good place. If it makes logical and financial sense, then who is the right one? Not what am I hiring out. And I like that step. That's the step in the direction where you start to realize that, okay, we're gonna make this next step. And then finally at the end is I want a who who is uniquely gifted to make every element of my podcast happen. This is what we believe we are at the podcast partnership. This is what I know our numbers and our results show. I'm obsessed with podcasts and I'm obsessed with my clients podcasts. And we have the ability to not just know what works for customer A, but is it true just for A, or does it go to B, C and D? Is this a good idea? Is this a bad idea? As things happen, it's funny as we get these unique special emails. Only to one of the clients, you know, has that email been sent to everybody else as well. You know, is a trend on Thursday because, you know, the Internet was broken or because people weren't necessarily interested in a specific episode. The client. We get this really unique ability to look at podcasting from a grand scheme as we look back and look across all of our clients and then a niche scene as we spend the time and attention that we do to the different clients. I've spoken in past episodes about this. This is not a How do I get the microphone to record and get that thing out there and hope somebody listens to it? This is a grand scheme of. As we saw, you know, in step one of the scorecard, it's. It's podcast gold. It's that real strategic intersection of the three elements that make the podcast what it is. And then it's constructing the shows around the seasons, which is part two of the mindset scorecard so that you're not stuck with having to get one out every week and sounding like you were stuck having to get one out every week. And then it's podcasting technology of using the podcast to be as smart as is humanly possible. Now, sometimes in tech, you want somebody else running it. My bookkeeper, Neil, knows the latest in submitting things to the government and whatnot, and I'm glad that he does. And he is uniquely gifted to make every element of my books happen, and we are uniquely gifted to help every element of our clients podcast happen. So that's where we're at in this. We want to be the one where the client goes to bed at night, not worried if something crashes. You know, it's our team that brings it back up. If Amazon launches a new directory, it's our team that makes sure that you are in there. If there are new rules or new standards, it's our team that makes the play, that makes the change so that you don't have to always learn. I mean, imagine if you had to know everything about social and you had to know everything about podcasting, you had to everything know about bookkeeping, you had to know everything about hr and you had to know everything about all this stuff. It's not going to happen. So, Dan, thank you for who not how. It's helped me out tremendously. Who not how was what got us to go to the next step. When I realized that project management was not my skill and I grabbed the who of Lenore to run projects for the podcast partnership, it was a big day for us and it's helped to growth tremendously and we now want to be the same for our clients. The who, not the How Next session. I'm not going to say next week because I can't promise this will get out. It's the goal. But you know how life is. One of the things about being obsessed with your client's success is they get to go first. And as you have things like global pandemics and fires in Oregon, things get really interesting. But what's fun is number five in the Mindset Scorecard, which I have, you know, right over there is the concept of effort versus strategy, and I think that one should be obvious, but I'm looking forward to chatting about that next week again. If you want to get a copy of our Total Mindset Scorecard, head over to headsuptuesday.com Dan's book who not how is revolutionary regardless of whether or not you think about podcasting with us in any way, shape or form, but know that our mindset here is not I don't want to teach how to use the mic the right way. I don't want to give you tips on which podcasting host to go with, but we want to be there for you to do all of it because your message is worth it. Thank you so much for listening to the podcast report. If you missed any of the first three, go ahead and get those back where you get your podcast now at Amazon Music, by the way, which is a lot of fun. And next time we'll chat about effort versus Strategy. Thank you so much. Have a great day. Bye now.
