In this short commentary, Paul Woodley explains how Jesus broke several first‑century Jewish cultural rules when he spoke with the Samaritan woman at the well. He highlights three main points: (1) Jewish men and women rarely interacted publicly, making a man approaching a woman socially prohibited; (2) Jews avoided any dealings with Samaritans, a distinct ethnic and religious group, so a Jew asking a Samaritan for a drink was highly unusual; and (3) the woman could identify Jesus as a Jew because he likely wore tassels (tzitzit) on his garments, a visible sign of Jewish observance. Woodley uses these observations to illustrate the radical nature of Jesus’ outreach across gender and ethnic boundaries.
