Short excerpt from a YouTube video ("Ads Won't Fix Broken Messaging") by Peter Vander Wall arguing that running ads before you have effective messaging backfires: advertising amplifies poor messaging, wastes money, and can actively damage your brand by exposing more people to an unappealing message (analogy used: a restaurant that sells sandwiches).

Hate ads don't fix your bad messaging, they just amplify it. Hormozi's got this story about, like, if you've got a restaurant and you sell sandwiches, like, marketing is just going to make things worse for you because you're going to tell more people you've got sandwich. And it's kind of the same thing here, right? If you're saying something that doesn't resonate with people, you're actually getting in front of more people who are not listening or not caring about what you have to say. And so they actually build this association with your face of, oh, this guy's not that interesting, and it doesn't have anything for me. And so you're actually doing yourself a disservice by not figuring out your messaging before you get into ads. It's not just that you're wasting money, it's that you're actively pushing people away from your brand and from your business.
