Peter Vander Wall explains why referral-based businesses plateau at seven figures. Referrals create inconsistent demand based on timing and luck. To scale past that, you need repeatable marketing and sales systems: define your ideal client, create a clear introductory offer, and figure out how to attract strangers who need what you sell.

No one builds a seven figure firm on referrals alone. Well, okay, that's technically not true. Like, people do it all the time, but they rarely grow past seven figures purely on referrals. And usually what I see is they shrink back down to six figures after a few years. See, this is the thing. You can't scale a business when your demand is based on luck, timing, or word of mouth. And so the firms that rely solely on referrals, they hit the ceiling. And it's not because of their skill, but it's because they never built any sort of real marketing and sales system. And so you need to do big boy or big girl business moves. You need to define a clear ideal client. You need to set a clear intro offer. You need to identify what will it actually take to attract strangers who are in need of this service.
