Peter Vander Wall explains why some founders hire less capable people to feel superior, and how it backfires. If you're the smartest person in the room, your team can't grow beyond you. He shares his own experience managing five employees who deferred to him constantly.
A lot of business owners will hire people dumber than them because that makes them feel good. If I've got five employees all coming to me with their questions and I'm the guy, like, to a certain extent, that makes me feel good because, like, that means that I'm the smartest guy in the room. But that's a huge problem. If you, as the CEO are the cap on your organization, you're as the founder, are the cap on your team, how smart of people you have on your team, well, the team's only going to grow better and smarter. At the rate that you grow better and smarter, that can be a problem.
