A short YouTube video (June 15, 2022) by Peter Vander Wall summarizing Rule 2 from Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life: treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping. The speaker contrasts how people care for others (medication adherence for children/pets) versus themselves, links poor self-care to negative self-identity, and advises treating oneself with respect to improve behavior and well-being.

We don't really take care of ourselves the way we take care of other people, do we? If your doctor tells you to take a pill every single day, a third of us won't even fill the prescription. But if your kid or your pet has to take a pill, well, every one of us would do our absolute best to make sure that that happens. Let's think about why this is. Every one of us is messed up, right? We make mistakes, we do things we wish we would stop doing, and we hate ourselves because of it. And many times we even let that become our identity. If you identify as a loser, then of course you don't take care of yourself as well as you could. Why would you? So what's the solution? It boils down to this. You deserve some respect. By treating yourself with respect, you'll feel better about yourself, and ultimately you'll become a better person. So stop doing what makes you happy and start doing what makes you better. This is Jordan Peterson's book, 12 Rules for Life. And today we're talking about rule number two. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping.
