A short YouTube monologue arguing that men seek hard, risky challenges for purpose and meaning. The speaker uses Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition—including Shackleton’s famous recruitment ad and the expedition’s shipwreck and heavy casualties—as an example, then draws a parallel to business as a modern arena that supplies purpose, meaning, and even physiological effects (e.g., changed testosterone levels).

Ernest Shackleton was like the first guy to explore the South Pole, Antarctica. Oh, and his advertisement for his voyage was men wanted for hazardous journey, low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness, safer turn, doubtful, honor and recognition in event of success. And that was what hooked him. That was what hooked him. And he got way more applicants than he could have ever possibly taken with him for that. So he had hundreds of men that he could go through and vet for this voyage, and they ended up, like, getting shipwrecked on Antarctica and, like, a lot of them didn't make it back. And it was like this insane, awful trip. But that's what men want and need. And I think when you have something that you're going out and conquering, for me, that's business. Like, business provides me the opportunity to do that, build my empire. That gives you a sense of purpose and a sense of meaning, and that changes the texture of your mind, which then manifests itself in physical forms like testosterone levels.
