The US lost Vietnam because it played a finite game while the Viet Cong played an infinite one. The Americans fought to win; the Viet Cong just needed to survive and keep fighting. Simon Sinek's framework explains why patience beats a deadline.
Chapters
The Vietnam War was the first time the US lost a war in basically forever. See, the problem is our strategy was way off. And this is really important. Even still. Today we probably have the most powerful military in the world, and yet somehow the Viet Cong were able to beat us. They had worse equipment, worse training, and way less resources behind them. Simon Sinek talks about infinite games versus finite games, and this is really where the US Went wrong. A finite game has set rules. It's got known players, and there's a specific way that you can win. An infinite game, on the other hand, has known and unknown players, no set rules, and there's no specific end to the game. America's problem is we were playing a finite game, but the Viet Cong, they were playing an infinite game. All they had to do was survive to fight another day. That's something you can do basically forever. If you treat your marriage as a finite game, you'll lose. You can't win marriage. You win by continuing to be married. So don't make the same mistake Uncle Sam did. Know the difference between an infinite game and a finite game, and then act accordingly.
