Peter Vander Wall argues work-life balance as a constant state is a myth. Instead, people cycle through seasons where one area takes priority, and that's fine as long as you tell the people affected it's temporary.

Work life balance doesn't exist. Everyone wants this perfect balance between all of their different competing interests. You got work, family, church, fitness, education. But you can't possibly juggle all of those balls at once. Instead, we go through seasons of focus on one thing or another. Sometimes you might be in a busy season of work, and that's okay. Just make sure your family and friends know it's temporary and you're gonna come back someday. Sometimes you might have family stuff going on that takes your focus away from your work, and that's okay too, as long as it's for a season and it's not your new reality. Letting go of this idea of BAL and realizing that life has seasons is really freeing, and it allows you to focus on what's important right now.
