Peter Vander Wall breaks down why videos lose viewers: a weak hook in the first few seconds. Your hook has two jobs: pull people in and set clear expectations. Overpromise or mismatch what you show, and they leave.

Here's why your videos don't get any views. Your hook sucks at this point, we all know the hook is the first couple seconds of the video and it's vital to a video doing well. You have to grab the viewer's attention and give them a reason to watch the whole video. Now what happens if you draw someone in with a great hook but then you don't deliver on the promise you made in that hook? For example, I could start a video going this is crazy. Watch all the way through to see how it turns out. But if it's just a cat playing with a ball of yarn, people aren't going to have the patience for that. The hook really has two jobs. Number one is to draw the viewer in, but number two is to set a really clear expectation for what the video is going to be. And if your hook doesn't do both of these things, then you're back to the drawing board.
