Case Study 612 Chemical Cleaning Methods on Planar Samples

PDF · 26 May 2026

This case study, authored by Jiyi Khoo, Majid Naderi, and Dan Burnett of Surface Measurement Systems Ltd., investigates how two chemical cleaning methods—commercial bleach and 2 M nitric acid—alter the surface‑energy heterogeneity of planar aluminium and polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon®) samples. The work highlights the importance of surface energy in microbial adhesion and cleaning efficacy, and critiques traditional contact‑angle methods for their limited ability to capture surface heterogeneity. Using the inverse gas chromatography with the SEA Film Cell (iGC‑SEA) accessory, the authors map dispersive (γ^D) and acid‑base (γ^AB) surface‑energy components across a range of surface coverages (n/nm) with n‑alkane and polar probe vapours. Results show that acid‑treated aluminium becomes more energetically active and heterogeneous, with increased γ^D (43–60 mJ m⁻²) and higher γ^AB, while bleach‑treated aluminium shows similar trends. For Teflon®, chemical treatments reduce the dispersive component but increase the acid‑base component, shifting the material from hydrophobic toward more hydrophilic behaviour. Gutmann acid‑base numbers (Ka, K_b) confirm changes in electron‑donor/acceptor site densities. Sessile‑drop contact‑angle measurements (water, diiodomethane, formamide, ethylene glycol) are presented for comparison; they agree with iGC‑SEA averages but miss high‑energy sites detectable only by the gas‑phase method. The study concludes that iGC‑SEA, especially with the specially designed SEA Film Cell, provides a sensitive, quantitative tool for assessing surface‑energy distributions and can inform the optimisation of cleaning processes and predictions of bacterial adhesion.

Motivation: Linking Surface Energy Heterogeneity to Microbial Adhesion and Cleaning Effectiveness

Explains why surface‑energy characteristics matter for microbial contamination and why understanding changes induced by cleaning is critical for industries such as semiconductors, food packaging, and domestic hygiene.
