This is a YouTube video titled "sales role" containing a monologue or personal advice segment recorded in September 2024. The speaker shares insights about the importance of understanding leadership styles before accepting a sales leadership position, emphasizing the challenges of working under an "Alpha leader" and advising on how to evaluate potential managers during interviews.
I made this big mistake before accepting a sales role. Learn from my mistakes. If you're joining in sales, especially as a sales leader, watch out for the leadership style of the person you would be reporting to. Asking them tough questions will go a long way in making the right career decisions. I made the mistake of joining an organization without knowing my reporting manager was an Alpha leader. To put it simply, an Alpha leader is someone who takes charge, exudes confidence and is seen as a dominant figure in a group setting, taking initiative and leading by example. Now I'm an Alpha leader myself. It was an obvious clash. Both wanted to steer the ship, leading to conflicts. This can hinder collaboration and create an unstable atmosphere within the team. The point is to understand leadership styles before taking a role in the company. During your interview, ask them open ended questions. Ask them to explain their leadership style. Put them in a tough spot deliberately. Ask them when was the last time people disagreed with them and how did they handle it? What was the conclusion like? The way they answer will tell you everything.
