Freestyle Libre 2 vs 3

Dr. Jaiwant Rangi compares the new FreeStyle Libre 3 CGM to the Libre 2. The Libre 3 reads glucose automatically every minute instead of requiring scans, uses a sensor the size of two stacked pennies that lasts 14 days, and has better accuracy at under 8% error. It's approved for ages four and up and costs about the same as Libre 2.

Foreign. Hello, I'm Dr. Rangi, I'm endocrinologist in Sacramento, here to discuss something new that is out in the market in the diabetes world. Freestyle Libre 2. We've been using this for more than a year now. But now we have Freestyle Libre 3 that just got cleared by FDA yesterday. That was May 31st. It should be available out for use in the next few months. By end of the year we should all be able to use it. There are a few things that I want to share with you. Number one, it will be available end of the year. Number two, it is approved for age four and more. We see patients that are more than 18, so we can obviously help anybody with adult onset type 2 diabetes or type 1 diabetes or need for glycemic control. But if it's a pediatric patient, then definitely to see your pediatric endocrinologist. There are a few important features of libre 3 that I want to share with you. Those who are using the Libre 2 know that you have to flash the sensor with either your phone app or with a device that comes with it. We call that monitor. And now you do not need to flash it anymore. With Libre 3 it will automatically pick it every minute and you can even see it on your phone, the changes happening every minute. It's much more smaller, thinner and easy to insert. It is the size of two pennies that could be stacked up together. So it's the thinnest of all the CGM that are available out in the market for 14 day sensors and easy to insert with a single device. And it's not complicated at all. Now the other thing that is exciting is it is very compared to any other Device available for 14 days, this is the most accurate in its data that you pick from the glucose values. There's something called mard. MARD is a value that is given to assess the accuracy of the information that you pick from the glucose values and that is less than 8 in this case. And the lower the mard, the better it is. The previous sensors that we had had accuracy or mard close to 9 to 10. So this is again a step forward where we have a little more accuracy in regards to the reliability of our numbers. Now obviously we always get question, how about the app? Is the Libre 3? Do we have the app already? So the app is going to be launched at the same time when we get the Libre 3 sensor available later this year, in 2022, maybe around fall or around winters. So the app will be simultaneously available and there's no wait for that later. In the year now there's something called the Caregiver app and that is something that is very exciting. It is called Link up which is available libre2 as well. And the linkup app helps you look at the share your data with at least 20 people if you wish to share your glucose values. Not that you need to share with 20 people, but you can link up to 20 people and they can share look at your data. Now one of the concerns that people had is that it was always putting alarms and alarming the other person as well. With Libre 3 what they've done is you can have a different set of alarms or threshold alarm for the user and for the receiver or the people they're sharing with, family members or friends, they can get alarm at a different level. What does that mean? So if you're using it with children or younger adults, if they're in class and they don't want the alarm to go off, their family can always see what their numbers are at certain point, even if it is not alarm for them. So that is my interpretation of that information. But more will have to be seen once we have the device in our hand and see how it works. Another impressive thing is that it has less carbon impact or carbon footprint. It is a much smaller plastic used and even the boxing and everything else is much smaller. So we are going to see difference made in the real world so we're not causing so much wastage. It has a long strongest Bluetooth integration compared to other CGMs it has. It can go up to a range of 33ft. In other words, if you don't have your monitor or your phone close by, it will since still pick up or sense your glucose values up to 33ft. And this is usually much higher than others. And there's a 50% less range that is available for other sensors. It has the same warm up time of one hour. When you put it on the first hour it's not reliable. After that you can use it to monitor your glucose values and it's the same price. So that is all that I have to share and I hope we get a chance to work with you if you have diabetes and if you're interested in this device, if you already are working with us and if you have type 2 diabetes and if you're on, I'm sorry, if you're on Freestyle Libre 2, whether you have Type 1 or Type 2 and if you wish to upgrade it to Freestyle Libre 3, we're happy to work with you and offer you once it is available so thank you so much for giving me a chance to discuss this with you. And we wish you luck and looking forward to working with you. If you wish to be our patient, Our number is 530-677-0700. Thank you.
