A comedian discusses balancing motherhood, marriage, a day job, and stand-up after becoming pregnant from assault. She tried making the trauma funny but found it too raw for audiences. Faith and authenticity kept her going through pregnancy without family support or money.
they have a family. So you got a husband and you're saying, I'm going to an open mic with a room full of men.
Yep.
How do you, how, how do you balance between that, being a mother, being a comedian, being a wife, being, you know, a dreamer, working a job? All those things. How do you balance that?
I'm, I'm gonna say, and it's gonna sound cliché, but God.
Okay.
And being authentic and not being afraid. You gotta be able to not be afraid. So with my son, Like, and my husband and I, like, I don't know, my son is going to know one day, but I was assaulted and that's how I ended up being a mother. It's okay. Because I wanted to be a mother, not this way, you know? So I was doing well in comedy and now I'm pregnant and I have no family here. I've told this story before. I wrote jokes too. I wrote jokes about it and it didn't go over well because it was too real. You know what I'm saying? And my husband now, God blessed me with a husband. I wanted my child to have a father. I wanted to have a husband because I never seen that dynamic. But because I was suddenly pregnant, right? And one of my best friends at the time in comedy, I called her. I was like, I'm pregnant. And she said the best thing she could say to me that led me into motherhood. She's like, I ain't got no money. You know what I'm saying? That she couldn't help me because I was at the clinic at the time. Like, girl. She's like, I ain't got no money. No.
No, no, no. Thing about being the Trailblazer, you gonna smell like smoke. Going city to city, we turning corners.
When you with Trailblazers smelling like smoke, pay attention to the joke.
