Ray Sorrell recounts a Bangkok taxi ride where the driver offered a faster route for 50 baht. He uses it to argue that Western distrust of strangers costs us real opportunities and moments we can't get back.

Everybody's not gonna like this, and to be real, everybody's not gonna understand what I'm about to say. So we're so brainwashed and we're so threatened in the West that we walk around with our guards up at all times thinking people trying to hustle us. I'm in the back of a taxi. The guy asked me a simple question: You want to get there faster? I say yes, of course. Tired of traffic, right? He started going and he said fifty bucks. Now I need y'all to understand what 50 baht is. 50 baht is not American. 50 baht come out to $1.50. And I was like, wait, wait, I thought you said— I said no. And I'm trying to explain to him what it says on the app. And he said, oh, I get that fast, I get that fast. And he did. We went through 2 tolls. He paid both of the tolls. With the fifty bucks that I gave him, with the dollar fifty. But we're so in our head thinking people trying to rip us off all the time that we can't even understand when somebody trying to help us out. Life is too short. Now turn that corner.
