Ray Sorrell argues that constantly bringing up an ex-partner signals unresolved attachment and a subconscious desire to be with them. He extends this to why society avoids discussing COVID: it was unpleasant. Thinking about an ex keeps them mentally present, he says, and those who deny it are likely the most preoccupied.

You ever notice how people who keep bringing up their ex are the most toxic? We can all agree that if there was something you didn't like, you wouldn't bring it up. I just realized people don't bring up COVID. We never talk about it. And the reason we don't talk about COVID or even what was going on during COVID is because it's something we didn't like. You ever notice the people who always bring up their ex, dog them out, talk a lot of trash, and then you be around them for a little while, you'd be like, I think they were the problem. And nobody really talks about this, but I'm gonna say this right here. If you keep bringing up your ex, you probably need to be with that ex. Here's the hard truth: that ex is gone, but they're still there because she or he is cheating on you right now in her mind thinking about that ex. Now you might disagree, but if you disagree, it's because you are the one who is always talking about your ex. Love is a choice. It's God's plan.
