It is the beginning of a new month and really a season. You know, kids are getting out of school right now, parents are finding new routines. You're going to help us be well through all of it, right?
Yes, yes. Happy June, Ashley and everybody. So yeah, I wanted to talk about 5 summer wellness essentials to take with you in your beach bag if you're going on vacation or even if you're staying here in San Diego.
Okay, you always have such clever tips for it. Some of it I'm like, well, I should have known this all along, but you have great ways of sneaking things into our routines. So what do you want to start with? What do we all really need on this list of essentials?
Yeah, so I would say those cross trainers over there, um, bring a pair with you because whether you are on vacation near the beach or even at home, it's just a good reminder to get out there and run, walk, hike, take a fitness class, just stay active. Obviously the weather is beautiful here in San Diego and elsewhere this time of year, and so being active is so important for your cardiovascular health, your strength training, flexibility, all of those things.
Great Good advice. I actually recently started just keeping a pair in my trunk because I would find myself in between kids' practices being like, "Oh, I wish I had my shoes. I could go for a walk." Sometimes I'm in a dress with them. It looks ridiculous, but at least I'm getting a little movement in. What else do we need to have on hand?
Yeah, so sunblock. Again, we live in California, in San Diego. It gets very hot and sunny here, and if you are vacationing in other tropical destinations, please, please, please, everybody wear sunblock. Protect your skin. Skin from harmful UV rays, prevent wrinkles, sunspots, all the things, melanoma. We want to be really careful and really safe. So a sun hat, obviously having sunblock. I really like anything over SPF 50, 70, or above if you can find it. Sunglasses, all the things. Just make sure you and your family— I know it's sometimes hard to get the kids to put on that sunblock, but keeping your skin safe and covered will allow you to be outside and enjoy the sun in a safe and worry-free way.
Yeah, and today I heard our meteorologist saying that the UV is 10. You burn in less than 10 minutes when the UV's that high.
Yeah, it is crazy. It can be very dangerous for your skin, and you also want to reapply usually every 2 hours, especially if you're going in the pool or the ocean and you're getting water on it. Some are waterproof, but it's always good to reapply.
Okay, and of course, hydration, key.
Yes, hydration is key. So, so important in those hotter temperatures, especially if you're active. So whether it's regular still water, fruit-infused water, sparkling water, or even adding some electrolyte replacements like we have here, or, you know, low-sugar Gatorade water down with water is a great way to go, but you really need to keep that hydration going. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water. We've talked about that before. So if you, let's say, weigh 120 pounds, you want 60 ounces of water, but obviously more than that if you are in extreme heat or being extremely active.
Okay, and you should all consider some summer reading. Reena, I know you have two great books out.
Thank you. I thought I'd bring them by for you guys. So yeah, add to your summer reading list. I love both nonfiction and fiction, so depending on whatever is your jam, Bring some books. These are two of my books, The Wellness Empowered Woman and The Wellness Evolved Woman. And Ashley, I always share my good news with you guys first.
Yes, oh my gosh, is there some today?
There's some news. So both of my books won Book Excellence Awards, and so Book Excellence, the organization, asked if they could be featured in Times Square on a billboard in August. Stop it. So for 24 hours on the hour, both books are going to be featured. So my husband and kids and I are actually going to New York and staying in Times Square to get to see it for ourselves.
That makes me so happy. You guys have to read her books and listen listen to her podcast. You are just such a wealth of information and you share it in such a relatable way. Congratulations! I'm so excited for you. Thank you. Um, before we run out of time, I don't want to move on from such a great announcement, but we do need to talk about these snacks. You, you perfect— you, uh, purposely chose some on-the-go snacks, right?
Yes, on-the-go snacks and, and fruit even that doesn't always have to be refrigerated, right? Like apples and tangerines. Cheese obviously does if you've got a cooler. Protein bars. I love Perfect Bars. These are my favorites. Nuts, just things that can really help you with getting protein and, you know, all the different vitamin C, all the great vitamins, and they're easy to put in your beach bag, especially for a fun beach day.
Yeah, well, all this stuff, as far as like the books and these water bottles go, these are available on your website, right?
They are, yeah, at passionfit.com. Yeah, the water bottles and the books are on Amazon and Barnes Noble.
Okay, wonderful. So exciting. Well, congratulations. I feel like we should come to New York with you. I know. We have to take the localist on the road.
