Can My Allergies Handle Naples Living?

In this Naples Revealed episode, real‑estate specialist Renee Hahn outlines the allergy landscape of Naples, Florida, for prospective residents. She begins by emphasizing that allergy considerations can be a decisive factor when choosing a home. The video details the most common environmental allergens—pollen from oak, pine, cedar, Bahia and Bermuda grasses, and ragweed—providing peak pollen counts and seasonal timing. It then moves to indoor allergens, explaining how the region’s high humidity fuels mold growth and dust‑mite populations, and offers practical mitigation tactics such as dehumidifiers and regular cleaning. Food allergies are addressed next, with a focus on shellfish, peanuts, and tree nuts, citing national prevalence figures. Insect‑related reactions—including bee, wasp, and mosquito bites—as well as occasional red‑tide events are also covered. Hahn shares personal strategies that have helped her daughter manage grass allergies, including allergy shots, and lists general prevention measures (air‑conditioning, humidity control, medication). Throughout, she ties the information back to real‑estate decisions, inviting viewers to contact her for assistance and to subscribe for future Naples‑focused episodes.

And of course, reach out anytime if I can be of assistance to you on your journey to explore Naples living. Let's face it, if you have allergies, especially severe allergies, where you live and how bad the allergy situation is could be a big consideration for you. I think we can all agree that Florida showcases beautiful weather and stunning beaches, which is viewed as a slice of paradise for many. However, for a few residents, it also means navigating the often challenging world of allergies. So whether you're dealing with seasonal sniffles or the more persistent issues, knowing the common allergies in Naples can help you enjoy sunshine while keeping your health in check. So without further ado, let's dive into the most common allergy issues faced by Naples residents and visitors. Number 1: Pollen and seasonal allergies. Ah, pollen, the dreaded harbinger of spring. Of course, with Naples being known for its lush greenery and beautiful flowering plants, it also means pollen is a big player in the local allergy scene. The primary culprits include things like trees. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, Oak, pine, and cedar trees contribute significantly to pollen counts, especially in the spring. During peak pollen seasons, our residents may experience pollen counts exceeding 1,000 grains per cubic meter. Ask a doctor, but that leads to the sneezy feeling. You might find yourself sneeze— sneezing just walking under an oak tree as it releases its pollen confetti. Grass is another one. Bahia grass and Bermuda grass can lead to allergic reactions in many residents, particularly during the warm months when these grasses are in full bloom. The National Allergy Bureau tracks pollen levels, and grass pollens can spike above 500 grains per cubic meter during summer months. Weeds— ragweed is a common allergen here, and flourishes in Florida. It can produce up to 1 billion grains of pollen per plant in one single season. If you thought you were escaping allergy season, think again. Ragweed has a way of showing up uninvited. And you've also got mold allergies. With the humidity that comes with Florida living, mold is another common issue. According to the CDC, mold thrives in environments with a humidity level above 60%. In Naples, where humidity can often exceed this threshold, residents again should be vigilant. Mold can be found indoors in things like bathrooms or other damp spaces, and it can harbor mold. If you've ever felt like you were living in a swamp during a summer, you might be on to something. If you look outdoors after heavy rains, mold spores can float through the air, ready to take you and make you feel miserable. In fact, studies have shown that mold counts can rise by 200% following significant rainfall. You've also got dust mites. They're microscopic creatures that thrive in warm, humid environments, so naturally they're going to love places like Naples. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates about 20 million Americans are allergic to dust mites. These little pests are found in bedding, upholstery, and carpets. If you've ever sneezed while cleaning your house, you know the battle with dust mites is real. Here are some tips though if you're looking to combat them. Regular vacuuming and washing bedding in hot water can help keep dust mites at bay. It's estimated that a typical household can have, get this, millions of dust mites lurking in carpets and bedding. So think of it as a workout, if you will. Who knew cleaning could help you flex those muscles? Another thing is using dehumidifiers. It can help reduce humidity levels in your home, making it less inviting for dust mites. It's one thing giving them a one-way ticket out of your living space. You've also got food allergies, and these are, can be a concern for many Naples residents. And while Florida is famous for its fresh seafood and tropical fruits, it's obviously essential to be aware of common allergies such as shellfish. The Food Allergy and Research Education, also known as FARE, estimates that approximately 2.3 million Americans have shellfish allergies. You're living in shellfish, um, paradise, if you will. Shrimp, crab, and lobster are delicious, but they can trigger severe allergic reactions in some individuals. If you're allergic, just remember those lobster rolls can be cruel temptations. You've also got peanuts and tree nuts, and these are allergies that are— can be widespread and can be found in many products, affecting approximately 6 million children and adults in the U.S. Make sure you read the labels carefully, or you might end up wishing you'd chosen a banana instead of that nutty cookie. And of course, insect allergies. With the warm climate comes a host of insects— there's another video for that— and some of them can lead to allergies. So just be aware of things like bees and wasps. Stings, stings from bees and wasps can actually cause allergic reactions in about 2 million Americans. So if you're allergic, it might be best to avoid floral patterns. They might just attract attention you don't want. Mosquitoes, and while technically not an allergy, mosquito bites can cause irritation and allergic reactions in some individuals. In Florida, where the mosquito population is estimated at more than 80 species, you find yourself scratching like a dog with fleas, consider carrying insect repellent wherever you go. So if you think about the things that you can find here They're not too unlike other places. Um, another thing that doesn't necessarily always get talked about is occasionally we have red tide flow in off the coast of Africa, and even those of us without allergies can get red eyes, um, burning in our throats. It's temporary. It's usually very short-lived and it doesn't happen very often, but that's another, uh, thing that can show up here in the Naples area. So again, I've heard mixed reviews. Some people say their allergies got better. Some say they got worse. I suppose it's all a matter of what type of allergies you have, but there are a lot of things that go on. So even though we are a more humid area, we run our ACs all year long, and AC keeps humidity down in houses, which helps keep the allergen-borne mold at bay. So there's a lot of preventative things you can do. My daughter, as an example, has a lot of allergies to to grass and things. And wouldn't you believe, she's a soccer goalie. What do you think she spends a lot of time on? On the grass. But she goes and gets regular shots that have helped her build up her resistance to those allergies, and it helps a ton. So there's a lot of things you can do in allergy-proofing your Naples life, um, to help get through some of the more daunting issues. But with some knowledge and preparation, you obviously can enjoy all the sunny paradise has to offer. From managing seasonal allergies to being mindful of food sensitivities, knowing what to look for and how to make decisions and intake and exposure can help you breathe easier and live comfortably. So grab your allergy medication, stock up on tissues, and don't let it keep you from enjoying the sunshine, because life in Naples is worth it, even if the pollen count can be a little high at times.
