Have you ever had an employee who understood exactly what you wanted and still didn't do it? Then understanding isn't buy-in. Have you ever had someone agree that a change was necessary but never follow through? Then agreement isn't buy-in. Have you ever personally committed to doing something and then stopped when it became difficult? I have. Have you? Then commitment alone isn't enough either. You can't teach someone to agree. You can't motivate somebody out of confusion. You can't hold someone accountable for an expectation they never understood. And you can't schedule enough meetings to create a commitment to someone who has never made it. Next time you're tempted to say they just don't have buy-in, stop. Replace your frustration with the magic of curiosity. Ask yourself, do they know? Do they understand? Do they agree? Are they committed? Are they determined? Are they struggling to persist?
