The most effective parents Use fewer words with more presence. When a child is angry, excited, or deep in an activity, their thinking brain is offline. They literally cannot process what you are saying. Timing matters more than words. So what actually works? One shift: move from correction first to connection first. Before you ask your child to do something, Spend 5 minutes just being with them. No agenda, no ask, no correction, just your calm presence. Let's understand why your child doesn't listen to you. You've said their name 5 times. You've asked them to put their phone down, to come and eat, to do their homework. And to just listen, and they haven't moved, and you feel something building inside you— frustration, helplessness, and then guilt about that frustration. If this is your evening, or most of your evenings look like this, then this video is for you. Hi, I'm Riddhi Deorah. I'm a certified parenting coach, and over the last 10 years, I built a beautiful digital school for mothers where more than 15,000 mothers are my students. And in this video, I'm not going to tell you how to be more patient. I'm going to give you a list of ideas. I'm going to show you exactly why your child doesn't listen, and it has nothing to do with your child. Here's the first thing: listening is not about sound. Listening is about safety. A child listens to people they feel safe with. Not the people who are the loudest, not the people with the most authority, the people they feel emotionally connected to. And this is where most parenting advice gets it wrong. We keep trying to change the child's behavior, but what we really need to change is that emotional temperature of our relationship with them. Let me give you a very simple example. Think about someone in your own life, maybe a boss, a mother-in-law, a person in authority, who you didn't emotionally feel safe with. Did you listen to them because they repeated themselves or because they threatened consequences? Eventually, we want to not listen too much. You obeyed when you had to, but you didn't really listen. Your child is doing the same thing, not trying to be difficult, Because that's what humans do when they don't feel connected. I worked with a mother, let's call her Deepa. Deepa came to me when she was completely exhausted. Her 9-year-old son refused to do anything she said. Homework, meals, bedtime— everything was a battle. She had tried everything— taking away privileges, rewarding good behavior, Consequences, charts, timers— nothing worked. In our second session, I asked her one question. When was the last time you and your son just sat together with no agenda? No homework, no reminders, no screen time negotiation— just the two of you? She went quiet, and then she said, I don't remember. That was the answer. Her son wasn't refusing to listen; he was refusing to cooperate with someone he no longer felt close to, because connection had slowly been replaced by correction. जितनी बार हम बच्चे को correct करते हैं, उतना वो हमसे दूर होते जाते हैं. Within three weeks of working on connection before correction. Deepa's son started going to her on his own. He went to her for help with homework, for conversations about school, for everything she had been chasing him for. She didn't need to chase anymore. She became someone worth coming to. So now let's talk about 3 things that make children stop listening, because once you see these, you cannot unsee them. Number 1, we speak too much. Research shows that children between 6 and 14 stop processing verbal instructions after the first 10 words. Yes, 10 words. After that, they hear only noise. We give speeches, explanation, context, warnings, consequences, all in one breath. And our children have already left the building. The most effective parents use fewer words with more presence. Number 2, we speak at the wrong moment. You cannot reach a child who's in the middle of an emotional flood. When a child is angry, excited, or deep in an activity, their thinking brain is offline. They literally cannot process what you are saying. Timing matters more than words. Number 3, we make listening feel unsafe. When a child knows that speaking up leads to being lectured or dismissed or shamed, they stop speaking. And when they stop speaking, they stop listening. Connection is a 2-way channel. If one person is talking It's not a relationship, it's a performance. So what actually works? One shift: move from correction first to connection first. Before you ask your child to do something, spend 5 minutes just being with them. No agenda, no ask, no correction, just your calm presence, eye contact, a question about their world, Connect with them. Ask them what they are interested in. Genuine curiosity about what they are thinking. And then ask. You will be stunned at the difference in response because your child was never refusing you. They were only missing you. Deepa told me something in our last session that I will never forget. She said, Riddhi, I spent three years trying to change my son, and all he needed was five minutes of me every day. Just me present with him. ये five minute की connection, तीन साल की correction से ज़्यादा powerful थी। If you want to go deeper into this, into how to rebuild connection with your child, how to heal the emotional patterns that create distance between you and your child.
