Engineer Happiness

A speaker outlines a practice of listing personal happiness sources and deliberately planning to include them each morning. He argues happiness is a choice shaped by perspective, not circumstances, and that being fully present and accepting imperfections is what makes a day feel like the best day of your life.

I have a friend that I'm stealing this phrase from because I don't think there's a better way of putting it. And he said he wakes up and he tries to engineer happiness. And what he does is he sits down and he makes a list of all of the things that make him happy. And in the morning, when he's planning his day and he's doing his morning routine, he thinks to himself, how can I get as many of those things into my day today? I think what makes me the happiest is to be in the present moment and accept everything exactly the way that it is. Imperfections, problems. If it's raining outside or it's cold outside, how can I figure out a way to appreciate the rain and the cold and to find something beautiful from it? What I think makes me the happiest is to be in the moment with whoever I'm with, whether I'm with somebody or whether I'm not somebody. Not with somebody. I could be with somebody. I could be alone. And just to sit there and go, what can I enjoy right now? And realize that everything that I need to enjoy to. To be happy is at this present moment. A lot of people wake up and it's okay to go out. And if somebody asks you at the register when you're checking out, how's your day? And you'd be like, oh, man, it's so hard. This happened. This happened. And the person at the register is like, yeah, I completely understand. That's normal. It feels like in society. But if someone asks you at the register, how's your day? And you're like, this is the best day of my life. They're like, how is it the best day of your life? What happened? And it's like, it's just the best day of my life because I decided that I was going to make today the best day of my life. And so we don't need a reason to be pissed off or miserable and all of those things I feel like in society. But we do need a reason just to be happy. And you just realize that being miserable is a choice. It's just the way you view stuff, and it's just the decisions you make. Being happy is just a choice. And you can decide in this very second just to be happy for absolutely no reason.
