Ep 97 - What I learned in 30 Years
1 Apr 2016 · 16 min
Rob Dial turns 30 and shares the one lesson that matters: your mindset determines your life. He uses analogies like mindset as a garden and the mind as a steel trap to show how your thoughts shape what happens next, and argues that you control your reaction to everything.

So what I wanna talk about today is today is actually my 30th birthday and I wanted to kind of come on and freestyle a little Little bit about what I've learned the Most throughout my 30 years of being alive. And most people, when they find out my age, they're surprised because they feel like with some of the stuff that I teach and some of the knowledge that I've just acquired over the past 10 years, 11 years now, that I should be 40, 45, 50 years old, I don't. I don't know. I guess they're just surprised by my age. But I do know that now it's been a third of my life I've spent on just personal growth, on trying to become the best version of myself, because I've seen what it does for me. And I've seen when I grow myself, everything around me grows. The people around me grow as well. My bank account grows, my happiness grows. Everything around me grows as well. And so that's why I was so passionate about starting this podcast and wanting to help other people. And I thought back to. And I was like, you know, there's a lot of lessons I've obviously learned in the past 30 years, but I want to think about what's the main lesson that I think I've learned the most that really can affect people and affect people's quality of life. And if you notice, most of my podcasts are about mindset in some sort of way, strategies to change your mindset, the way you think about things. And I wanted to get out something short. And the one thing that I think is most important for us to understand more than anything else is that the quality of our mindset will dictate the quality of our lives. The people who are the happiest in the world, not just the richest or the most successful, the people that are the happiest, the. That really live their life to the fullest are the people who have the best mindset. The people who have the best relationships around them are the people who have the best mindset. The people who really take advantage of every single day are the people who have the best mindset. And some people, most people more than anything else, go through life and they never really take any action, or they never really understand that no matter what happens to them in their lives, they. They're in control of their lives, and they're in control of how they react to that situation. We all know people who have gone through something extremely terrible, and it cripples them, and they're never the same again. But then we also know people who have been through something really terrible, maybe even worse than the other people, and that is actually a building Block for them to become better and for them to learn. And sometimes that's just the catalyst for them to become a completely different person, which is even stronger and better. So what's the difference? You know, the same thing could happen to one person as another person, but they could go two completely different routes. You know, it's the perfect example that I've given a few times before where they said there's two twins and both of them have an alcoholic father. The two twins grow up and down the road, 30 years down the road, they interview both of them and one of them is an alcoholic. And they say, why are you an alcoholic? And he says, I'm an alcoholic because my father was an alcoholic. And then they interview the other twin and he's a successful CEO and they say, why are you not an alcoholic? And he says, I'm not an alcoholic because my father was an alcoholic. And the thing is, they had the exact same situation raised at the exact same point by the exact same people. But the difference was their mindset. So you have to realize when something bad happens to you, how do you react to it? I had this conversation actually yesterday and today. Two of my coaching clients had some. One of them had something pretty bad happened to them, one of them had something pretty, you know, much worse happen to them. And for both of them, we were talking about it and I said, as terrible as these things are, what you really have to think about is how you're gonna react to it. And I'm not saying that you don't pay attention to it and mourn if you need to. But what I'm saying is stuff like this is gonna happen to you, it's gonna happen to everybody. And what you need to do is, when you're in that moment, go, what can I learn from it? Well, you know, if somebody passes away, what could I learn from it? Well, I could, I could learn that, that I'm still alive. They were younger than me and maybe I should do something whenever I'm sitting around and completely wasting my life to get up and do something. You can learn something from every situation.

I was talking about how I'm about to take a trip to Nicaragua. Actually, by the time this episode comes out, I'll actually already be in Nicaragua. And I was having a conversation with someone. They were saying, well, aren't you worried about traveling over to a third world country about the safety? And I said, hell no, I'm not worried. And the reason why is because I think that those third world countries, most of the ones that I've traveled to, are usually safer than being in America. You know, it's not as easy to get ahold of guns over there, but the thing more than anything else is, is that people over there, even though they have almost nothing, they live in basically tin boxes. They're some of the happiest people and the kindest people and the nicest people and the most giving people that I've ever met in my life. And the reason why is because their mindset, their mindset is just that way. So our lives, we're in control no matter what. Whatever happens to us, we're in control of whatever happens. We're in control of how we react to it, and we're in control of our day to day, every single day as well. Your mind can be your greatest asset if you let it be your greatest asset. And that's the thing that I want you to realize the most. If I were to pull. One thing that would affect all areas of your life is that if you, if you work on your mindset, you work on making your mind a steel trap and you groom it exactly like the garden I always talk about, you're gonna have the greatest life you possibly could. And I'll give the analogy again, because some people may have heard this, some people may need to hear it again, is that you need to treat your mind like a garden. That garden, if you're a gardener and you're the only person that can get ahold of it, and you wanna have a strawberry garden, you wanna have the most beautiful strawberry garden you've ever had. Well, you can't take strawberry, or you can't take tomato seeds, plant them in the ground and expect strawberries to grow. It's impossible. You have to plant strawberry seeds. So if you want a positive life, you have to think positively. You have to put positive thoughts in your life to create that positive life. Just like you would. You have to put strawberries in in order to get strawberries. You can't take tomato seeds and expect strawberries to grow just like you can't take negative thoughts and expect just to have a positive life. Your mindset affects everything. So when people say, well, love is the most important thing in the world, well, yeah, but that love is determined by how your mindset is with that love, how much you appreciate that person. So if I were to say the most important thing in the world is your mindset, how you deal with everything that happens to you in the world, your mind can be your greatest asset, or it could be the thing that keeps you in prison. So your mind can be a greatest asset in this world, or it can be the thing that keeps you in prison. So it either sets you free or it keeps you as a captor. And that's the thing, is that some people are just like zombies. I see people around the world, and the reason why I started this podcast is. Cause I see people, and they don't realize what they can do. They don't realize their potential because they've never locked into it. They've never really decided to take control. Your life is like a ship. You're the captain of the ship, whether you realize it or not. You're either in control of where it's going and you know exactly where it's going, or you're just letting that ship just drift off into the sunset. You're in control of what you're doing. So if you want to make a positive life, if you want to make the life that you really want, you have to work on your mindset in yourself more than anything else. And that's the hardest thing for some people, because some people are so giving. I know some of you out there, mothers and fathers and brothers, and you're taking care of other people, and it's hard for you to say, well, I need to focus on myself. But the quality of everything else, the quality of your relationship with those people and the quality of their lives will be affected by how strong your mindset is and how in control of your mind and your world you are taking care of. Like, it's the most important thing.
Absolutely.
So if I were to say in 30 years, the one thing that I could tell you more than anything else is gonna be the one that affects you the most, is that if you take control of your mind, you take control of everything in it, and you make it your mission to go on a journey of personal growth, to go on a journey of learning to learn as much you possibly can, to read as much you possibly can, to watch as many YouTube videos as you possibly can, listen to many podcasts, you possibly can because your mindset will directly affect the quality of the life that you have. So with that, if you want to give me some type of birthday gift, the only gift that I really want is for you to go out and do something today that will positively affect somebody else's life. What I mean by that is I'm going to leave you the same way I leave you every single episode. Make it your mission today to make somebody else's day better. I don't want anything. I want you to go out and do something for someone else. So I appreciate you and I hope that you have an amazing day.
