The excerpt covers the second scam, deceptive advertising, warning viewers about dangerous links, phony social-media contests, spoof websites and bogus gift cards during holiday shopping. McAfee online security expert Robert Siciliano appears in the clip explaining how spoofed e-tailer sites steal usernames, passwords and credit card information and advises monitoring credit/debit card statements.
Well, it's as old as the hills. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Oh yeah, how many times have you heard someone say that? Don Lagana is about to say it again, and he has another holiday alert in tonight's 12 Scams of Christmas.
The second scam of Christmas and the holidays: deceptive advertising. Everyone's searching for steals and deals during the holidays. Now keep your eyes peeled and your wallet in check when online shopping for this season's most popular gifts and products. Dangerous links, phony contests on social media, Facebook, Twitter, and bogus gift cards are just some of the ways scammers try to steal your personal information and ruin your holiday cheer. If you aren't careful, you could end up clicking on a spoof website and giving a crook a very, very Merry Christmas at your expense. McAfee's online security expert Robert Siciliano explains.
Spoofed websites look like the e-tailer but are in fact designed to get you to type in your credentials— again, the usernames and the passwords or your credit card information. So if you end up entering your credit card information to a spoofed website, they're going to make fraudulent charges. So make sure that every single week, especially during the holidays, you are paying close attention to your credit card statements.
If you have a debit card or credit card with your bank, you can do that online and make sure that's secure too. With the second scam of Christmas, deceptive advertising. We have 10 more to go. Don Lagana, WTOC News.
