The WBZ News segment reports a burglary in Nahant captured by an in‑home surveillance camera. Reporter Jim Smith describes two young men breaking into a residence, stealing a flat‑screen TV, a laptop and other items. The video, recorded by the homeowner’s security system, provided clear evidence for police investigators. Resident Clement Trompe, whose street was the crime scene, expresses fear and decides to purchase a surveillance camera for his own home. The segment also features nationally known home‑security expert Robert Siciliano, who emphasizes the cost‑effectiveness and protective value of video surveillance, noting his own setup of sixteen cameras and recommending that homeowners combine cameras with alarm systems. The report underscores the growing popularity of home‑security systems and their role in crime detection and deterrence.
Tonight, people living in Nahant are on guard. They're on the lookout for some crooks breaking into homes. And as Jim Smith shows us, police have a crystal clear view of these thieves caught in the act.
Nahant police say this is video of a crime in progress. Two young men casually going about their business, burglarizing a home. They take their time, making off with a flat-screen TV, possibly a laptop, and bags of other loot. The robbers are still on the loose, but there's one thing they don't know. They've been captured on video by an in-home surveillance camera.
It's scary to see that people will come inside a house like that.
Clement Trompe lives on the street where the break-in happened. Now he wants to get a surveillance camera too.
I'm very worried, then I'll put a circuit— I'll buy a camera and put in the house, you know, just, just to— because of that.
You're thinking of buying a system?
I was thinking about that, see. Then I think I will buy one now. I'll buy one just to— just for security.
The video is obviously a key piece of information for investigators, and it wouldn't have been possible at all without that home security system. Those systems are becoming more and more popular.
He's got something, looks like a laptop.
We showed the video to Robert Siciliano, a nationally known home security expert. He's got 16 cameras at his house, 8 watching the outside, 8 watching the inside.
In today's day and age, having video surveillance is cost-effective, and I find— to be very necessary. It's definitely a layer of protection that all homeowners should have in place.
These guys certainly didn't seem to notice the camera, but it does not appear as though any alarm was going off at the home. The experts say if you're going to bother with a camera, definitely get an alarm. In Nahant, Jim Smith, WBZ News.
