In a News 7 segment, health reporter Joy Sutton interviews personal safety expert Robert Siciliano, who emphasizes that the most important defense against crime is mental awareness. Siciliano outlines four initial steps for personal security, including installing a home security system and taking a self‑defense course, and stresses the importance of constantly monitoring one’s surroundings and trusting one’s “sixth sense.” He advises targeting vulnerable body parts—toes, eyes, and groin—if attacked, but recommends fleeing when an assailant is armed, likening it to a deer escaping a hunter. The interview also highlights Siciliano’s motivation stemming from personal experiences with violence, his efforts to educate the public through a TV pilot on personal security, and his book “Safety Minute,” aiming to encourage proactive safety measures.

Well, here is a question for you. Would you know what to do if someone tried to rob or attack you? Tonight we'll show you how to protect yourself. News 7's health reporter Joy Sutton joins us with some advice. Jean, one expert tells me your best defense is your brain. Knowing how to avoid or get out of a dangerous situation. Crime. We hear about it on the news, but most people don't believe it will happen to them. So they're not prepared. It's one of the mistakes personal safety expert Robert Siciliano warned the audience about at Carilion's Women's Health University.
At a young age, being a victim of violence and seeing others around me also victims of rape, it really empowered me to make an effort to do something to educate all those about what their options are regarding their personal security.
Installing a home security system and taking a self-defense course are just two of the first 4 steps he recommends. But Siciliano says it's also about paying attention to your surroundings at all times and never ignoring your sixth sense.
It's that ability for you to sense danger. And in our very physical and concrete world, we don't think a lot about our sixth sense. But really, it is that key to survival. If you sense danger, if you feel something's wrong, chances are something's wrong.
If you find yourself under attack, there are some key areas to target, like the toes, eyes, and groin. And if they have a gun or other weapon?
If anybody ever has a gun, the best thing to do is run. When a deer in the woods sees a hunter, it runs.
Okay, Gene, some good advice there. Now, Siciliano recently filmed a TV pilot show on personal security. He's hoping to get that on the air. He also has a book out called Safety Minute. He's just trying to educate people to be proactive.
He has a lot of good advice. Mm-hmm. Thank you very much, Joy.
