Joining us now is safety specialist and author of The Safety Minute. Very good idea. His name is Robert Siciliano. Now, you have to listen to this, and you have to listen philosophically too. It has to get inside your head. I'll read the first tip: don't associate with unhealthy people. Hello, don't associate with unhealthy people. What does that mean?
Well, you know, there are many people walking around today that we could consider to be mentally ill. A lot. Many, more than 50% of people have some form of mental illness.
Right.
And you have to be able to point out who has this type of emotional disability. And once you recognize that, well, it's your responsibility to stay away from those kind of people, or if they're in your family, to at least help them. Now, if you are unable to recognize that type of person, chances are then you might be a little unhealthy yourself.
No, you listen to him because philosophically it seemed to me through the 20 years of doing this show, whenever anybody came on and they were with somebody who was a real bad guy, in talking to them it always occurred to me there's something wrong with them that they're with the bad guy. So this is, you know, that's no joke. Number 2, know your personal boundaries.
Well, we all have a certain personal comfort zone, an area around our body that we only let certain types of people in. You know, like you wouldn't just let me walk up to you and kiss you in the mouth. I wouldn't do that.
Right.
Well, if somebody violates your personal comfort zone, if they come into your energy area, your zone around your body, and they mean to do you some form of harm, you know, they're projecting negative energy your way.
Right.
Well, it is your responsibility to right there and then stop that. Not to allow anybody to verbally abuse you, to physically abuse you.
Somebody calls you a name or says anything bad about you, ever. And how many women go on these talk shows and the first thing they say is somebody is verbally abusing them? And men too. Number 3, trust your instincts. Some people don't have good instincts, but trust your instincts.
Well, listen to your intuition, which is perception beyond the 5 senses. It's that extrasensory system which operates with data from your 5 senses. By paying attention to your intuition, to that power inside, you will be able to avoid and remove yourself from a dangerous situation.
Be aware of your environment, and that even means the lock on the car door if you're in there with somebody that begins to look suspicious. Be aware of your environment.
Know what is going on around 50 to 100 feet around the perimeter of your body at all times. Awareness is consciousness, and consciousness is what living is all about. And by being aware of everything going on around you, you can see danger before it comes to you.
Strengthen your mind and your body. Now, we're told exercise, we're told walk, we're told do all kinds of things. We talk a lot about martial arts. I happen to be, as I've told you, 13 years in tai chi. I'm still bad, but that's it. But I know I have confidence in myself because of those years of what is a martial art.
And strengthening your mind and body goes way beyond physical self-defense. It's all about strengthening your mind, being a better person, a better human being, so that you can teach all those around you to be better people, to be better humans, to be more evolved. You know, get involved with this self-help movement that's going on today. And you will weed vampiric people out of your life, people who suck your life energy out.
A lot of people around you and try to suck your energy. Boy, you're good. This is the Safety Minute, uh, how to be safe on the streets, at home, and abroad. 15 years of experience in this. We'll be right back.
