Hi, I am Robert Siciliano, home security expert to Schlage, today discussing summertime is burglary time, so lock it up. Now, according to the US Department of Justice, an American home is broken into about every 15 seconds. Summer marks a busy time of the year when Americans need to be extra aware and vigilant regarding home security breaches. So here are a few tips to keep your home secure during the summertime months. First and foremost, protect your home's main entry point—front door and back door—by installing strong locks like the Schlage touchscreen deadbolt. Also, don't leave windows open and unlocked while you're gone, even if it's just for a few minutes. Close and lock them making sure that burglars can't just creep through. Now, don't leave outside lights on for 24 hours a day. Use timers on indoor and outdoor lights, giving your home that lived-in look. Don't leave your driveway empty. So when you're gone, have a neighbor or a friend park their car in your driveway when you're gone. Also, don't allow your overgrown grass to grab attention. Or overgrown shrubs. Have them trimmed by a landscaper. Also, don't park your car openly before a trip. Do it like under the COVID of darkness or in a garage. Have a trusted friend or family, uh, or a neighbor collect your mail or deliveries while you're gone. And don't list your vacation plans on social media. Never a good idea. Lock all your doors and unplug garage door openers, right? Also, don't share your travel plans on a voicemail's outgoing message. Kinda stupid. And don't leave valuables sitting on dressers or in drawers unlocked. Put them in a safe. Also, use home automation systems like the Nexia Home Intelligence to check in on your home from afar. You can do it remotely over the net. Summertime doesn't have to be burglar time if you follow these do's. Do's and don'ts. So, that being said, I am Robert Siciliano, home security expert to Schlage, reminding you that security is a journey, it's not a destination, it's not a place you ever arrive to. That means staying on your toes and keeping your head up. Thanks so much.
