TikTok's owner ByteDance has 9 months to sell the app, another 3 months to complete the deal. If ByteDance can't or won't sell the app, TikTok would not disappear from phones, but users would be unable to update or download the app. President Biden signing a bill that gives TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance 1 year to sell it, or the app will be banned in the U.S. It's going to make America safer. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill concerned the Chinese government can easily gain access to the data of 170 million Americans who use the popular app, as long as ByteDance owns TikTok.
Yeah, the problem with, with China having this much power is that they have power over us and how they influence us.
Cybersecurity expert Robert Siciliano says TikTok gives China not only backdoor access to our personal data, but daily access to content that can potentially misinform, sway minds, and divide us.
The U.S. government does not allow certain Chinese-made technologies in the U.S. for that reason. It is that backdoor access that the Chinese definitely have and want that definitely poses a risk to our critical infrastructures, our money, and our safety.
Some content creators say a ban on TikTok would be devastating, hurting those who rely on it for income, and that such a ban infringes on their freedom of speech. Congressman Jake Auchenglass co-sponsored the bill.
Freedom of speech is not freedom of reach. You do not have a right to have whatever you post amplified by an algorithm controlled by a foreign adversary. There are no civil liberties for a Chinese communist algorithm.
But TikTok is vowing to fight that ban in court. In the newsroom, I'm Mary Saladin, WCBB NewsCenter 5.
