Embracing Positivity in Podcasting and the Future

Rob Greenlee, with two decades in radio and podcasting, argues creators should stop amplifying anger and distrust online. He says podcasting is now the dominant platform where audience voices matter more than creator ego, and urges fellow creators to listen to diverse perspectives instead of adding to the noise.

Hi, this is Rob Greenlee. I just wanted to make this quick little video while I'm out for a walk in my neighborhood, trying to get some exercise and stay healthy as we move into spring. And just wanted to say that I've been doing a lot of thinking about the commentary that I'm putting out about podcasting and what the future looks like and how everybody's all worried about video. So my kind of adjustment in my thinking is that going forward, I'm going to be extremely positive about being an online kind of media creator and thinking more broadly about what podcasting is and what it means to the consumers of podcasting and how that translates into how I think about being a content creator. So I encourage you all to just kind of open your minds and think about what you're putting out there in the world that is either adding to a more positive outlook as we deal with an increasing environment of distrust, anger, and really extreme views. And so I'm not trying to preach here. I'm just trying to say that I'm going to be taking an increasingly more proactive style with what I'm doing online and not being part of the problem, but being part of the the solution. Granted, even doing that can come across as, well, he's got an agenda. Well, I don't really have an agenda here other than just to be honest and fair about what I see happening in the world from the 20 years that I have experience in online content creation coming out of radio. Doing a lot of audio podcasting for many years for a lot of podcasting companies and have been involved very early in the era of podcasting when video was quite large. So I just want to take a more proactive approach with content creators and, and really to bring a more positive outlook in a time and an era when Everyone is so angry and upset and worried and fearful. And so anyway, that's all I really wanted to say. And I'm not exactly what— know for sure exactly what that looks like as far as what I'm going to say and contribute to the discussion. But one thing I do know is you is is far more important than I. So it's increasingly obvious to me that your views, your thoughts are more important than, than mine. And as a collective of all the people out there that are involved in contributing to this world of online discussion, which is really becoming a dominant medium all by itself. And the legacy mainstream media is getting drowned out by the voices of all of you. And that's the other thing that I'm going to be really more focused on is the power of the of the, of the consumer and the power of the voice that you have to influence and shape the world that we live in. It can be very contentious. It can be very volatile, but I think holding on to our principles of free speech and open lines of communication, my only hope is that all of us have an open mind. And are willing to listen to others and not just preach our own biased views. So have a wonderful day, and I'm just about to wrap up my walk. I probably need to get more out of breath than I am, so maybe I might go around the block again. So, all right, we'll talk to you soon. Bye-bye.
