Rob Greenlee breaks down podcast cover art: use a simple, story-telling image with clear text overlay, keep your title short and keyword-rich, and include your face to build personal brand. He explains why episode-level artwork differs from show-level, and how Apple Podcasts handles separate RSS feeds for audio and video.

takeaway. Make the image simple, pop, let the image tell a story, and then just let the, the text kind of overlay. And this is more of a pitch for the YouTube type of situations, and I'm going to talk about that a little bit more here later on this, but I can give you a little bit of a tease on that about what is actually going on with that. Maybe I'll wait on that a little bit. I did want to just run through some of the critical elements of podcast cover art. And I think the really, the first one is title. What's the title that's on your artwork? What's the words that are used? And is the title on your artwork or the name of the show, is that a clear reflection in some ways that this gets into kind of another layer around, well, what is the actual show name? I mean, and that's an important component of this, right? Two, it needs to be short and concise. And this is more than just about your cover art. This is about basically being able to create all your marketing messaging and having keywords in there that are important for your show, right? Just like I showed you with the, with the COVID art for this program, this is what's a clear and concise name. There's not a lot of characters, there's contrast. And so when you make this image smaller, it's readable, right? People can read it. I haven't cluttered it up with a bunch of other text, so it has a focal point to it, right? It's me. And a lot of people don't know, associate my name with my face. But what it does is it adds an element of personhood, right? There's a person behind this. And over a period of time, what you're doing is you're building your visual personal brand with your audience and in association with that topic of the show, which is very descriptive to what I do with this show. I've got a version of this art that says Live Audio Podcast Tips, and I have one that's Live Video Podcast Tips. And those are in the Apple Podcast ecosystem, two separate RSS feeds, that one has the audio. The one that says audio has an audio file in there, and one that says video has a video file in there. And but my topic is about that. It's about also about doing live video podcasting as well as doing live audio podcasting, because really they're all the same thing when it comes to this show. So, so It's very meta for what I'm trying to do here. There's no doubt about that. So those names, that, that name of your show is so important. And so there's like, like I talked about earlier, there's the name of the show and then there's the episode titles, right? And there's two different kinds of artwork that you can make. You can make the episode artwork for YouTube or for your podcast, and all the hosting platforms support episode-level art, and Apple encourages it.
