Rob Greenlee argues that Gen Z, Gen X, and Millennials have made video the dominant content format. He points to the recent presidential election, where one candidate succeeded with podcasts while the other didn't, as proof that new media now matters politically. Audio podcasts have barely grown despite the video boom.

And that in combination with a shift in demographics and a generational shift in what people prefer, the younger generation that's moving through, I'm talking about Gen Z, Gen X, those folks, and to a large degree, millennials really embrace video. It shouldn't be surprising to any of us in that this is the direction that things are going to move. And like I said, as we've seen legacy media, right, and it's important, and we just saw this right in front of our eyes with what happened with the recent presidential election and how one candidate was able to, I think, successfully utilize podcasts to get reelected, and the other candidate really tried to but really maybe had less success on that side, has really brought to the fore this whole conversation about how important new media is. And new media incorporates tube as well as audio podcasting. As I've been thinking about this, and many of you that have been following me for the last maybe year and a half, I've been very focused on this kind of concept of convergence. And seeing what I'm doing here tonight with you, convergence even to the point of doing live shows. And that's an important part of what I'm all about. And that's really, that's really where things are right now. It's not like this is a show talking about where things are going. I will say that's where we are right now. And so as you look to even the next couple months, whatever, and then even looking back, like maybe 3, 4, 5 months in the past, audio podcasts have really not grown much. So that's a very frustrating aspect of what's happening in the market right now is that the podcast industry really got their feet dug in on audio podcasting as what they were known for and what they did the most of.
