How To Ask Better Questions (For A Winning Podcast Interview), With Roland Frasier
2 Feb 2026 · 1 min
Roland Frasier explains how he prepares for podcast interviews: he obsessively researches guests by reading their books, watching past interviews, and following their recommended reading. Then he asks provocative questions that reframe their expertise, like asking negotiator Chris Voss how to negotiate with yourself.

I think that you can ask a lot better question when you have an obsessive familiarity with the people that you're going to interview. So, you know, as someone who interviews a lot of people on the Business Lunch and at Traffic and Conversion Summit, I've got Arnold Schwarzenegger and Marcus Lemonis coming up that you guys will hear. And also last year I interviewed Richard Branson. Well, I read every book and everything that I can about these people after I read the book. The book is usually the most consolidated resource for information that somebody did. So Branson had, I think, five of them. I read all five of them. And by read I usually mean I listen to it at, you know, two and a half speed on Audible. And then I will go and watch any video interviews they had and I'll look and see if they've got a blog. I'll look and see if they've got a list of books that they've recommended and I'll go read those books. I'm an insane person with this stuff. I'm very obsessive about interviewing. So when I then talk to and Chris Voss, I've had a chance to meet and hang out with at Genius Network in person, gave him a testimonial for his book because it's so great. So I get to know all the people that I interview. I really just obsess about before they, before I get to do that. Gino Wickman I just interviewed. He's got, I think six books. I read them all and then looked at what his current stuff was. Now then you get curious and I don't want to ask the questions that everybody else ask. And so I hadn't seen like with Chris, I hadn't seen him talking about. And maybe he had because there's so much information out there, but I hadn't seen him talking about how do you negotiate with yourself? Because we're always talking about how do we negotiate with everybody else. But the person that's the most obstructive to anything that you want to accomplish is your own daggone self. And so how do we use what he's taught and what he shared so generously with us on how to negotiate with other people? He in a context that's different from what I've heard him share before. So you can also ask different questions. Cause I do lots of interviews too. And if people ask you the same daggone questions every time, it gets kind of old, right? So how can you be provocative and curious and then look for something different that still allows the person to talk about the framework that they've got, but in a different context?
