Why It’s a Bad Idea to Make Assumptions with Roland Frasier
2 Feb 2026 · 12 min
Roland Frasier shares two stories from live events where he made wrong assumptions: missing a family member he didn't recognize, and asking someone to leave who turned out to belong there. He argues that clarifying intent before acting saves you from costly mistakes.

Hey guys, Roland Frazier here just finished doing an event, a live event in Austin, Texas. We have an event called Scalable Impact Live and it's really interesting. I had a couple of things happen that I think lead me to want to share something with you about making assumptions. One is that I had invited a member of my family to come to the event and, and he was there when I, when I got off the plane and drove in and, and I didn't see him. And he was. Said he was standing about like 8ft away from me and then was a person or two behind me in line. And. And he got upset with me. And I didn't know. I didn't even see him because I was. I had flown on the plane with a little bit of a head cold. I got off, my ears were stopped up, so I couldn't really hear that great. And we had a VIP who had paid for an in air consulting. And so I'm texting because we'd promised them they wouldn't have to check in. So I'm texting and not getting a reply. And so then calling my team, trying to get them to come here to the front so that we could get him his keys and get him checked in and everything. And I was looking only for my team, not looking for anybody else. And I hadn't seen this, this family member in the past, gosh, like five years or so. And before that another five years or so. And it was really funny. So the next morning I went down to breakfast and I texted and I was like, hey, I'm down at breakfast if you want to come. Didn't hear anything. You know, a couple more texts, probably five or six texts over the next few days. And finally I said, are you okay? I'm worried about you. And the text back said, I'm okay. I'm upset with you. Because we waved to you from about 6 to 8ft away when you came in. And then we were in line, a person behind, and you turned around and looked, but you didn't see us or say hi, and therefore we went home the next day. And so he was mad at me. He was actually upset with me because he thought that I was completely blowing them off, but I wasn't. I wasn't focused on looking for them. So, like, the context of I didn't walk in there thinking they were going to be there. And honestly, I have. There's a thing that Steve Wozniak had that I didn't know existed until I heard this from him. But basically, it's a slight for me case of an inability to recognize faces out of context. And so between that and it not being in context and actually looking for somebody else, I accidentally blew off a member of my family and he got mad at me and we ended up patching it up because I was like, dude, I am so sorry. I actually, I wanted to go to dinner with you. I wanted to see you. I just didn't. Didn't have a Chance to, you know, I didn't have a chance because I didn't recognize you. So that was the first thing. The second thing was that at our big event, Traffic and Conversion Summit, earlier in the year, like a month. Month or two ago, I had. We have a private room that is just for the. The. For me and Ryan Deiss and Richard Lender, and it's where we go. And we have the celebrities that we're going to meet show up before we go on stage so that you can have a conversation with them before you go up. So it's not just totally cold. So the. The room is called the Founders Room, and we also have a. A mastermind called the Founders Board. So you can see that there might be some confusion that comes from this. Well, here's what happened. So I went into the Founders Room with Chip Wilson, who was the founder of Lululemon, who I was about to interview, and there were a couple people in there that we didn't know who were just kind of like having a meeting, and we didn't know who they were. And we don't allow anybody in the room. There's security at the front to stop that from happening because we've had. Sometimes people will try to get into rooms they're not supposed to get in because they want to meet the celebrities or whatever. And. And so I was like, you know, hey, are you guys, you know, is there any something I can do to help you? And they're like, no, we're just having a meeting. And I was like, well, you. You can't. You can't do that in here. We've got. We've got a meeting in here. And it's. It's private room, so I'm going to have to ask you to leave. And they were kind of upset with me, actually. They were very upset with me. And, and my group was like, you know, gosh, those people kind of crash in the room. Why. Why were they upset about being in a room that they shouldn't have been in? Well, well, I didn't hear anything from him until this weekend. And he texted me and said, hey, I just want to let you know this is something that was bothering me, how I was treated there, because you have this room. I asked the people who were working the event, the Clarion team that was working the Traffic and Conversion Summit event. I said, you know, hey, do you have a place I can do a meeting? And they said, are you a founder? And he said, well, I am. I'm a member of Founders Board. And they pointed him into this room. Now, now keep in mind, this is the room that's probably the most private, most secure room because our celebrities by contract get a place to spend time, right?
To be when they come there, to.
Not have to talk to people so they can get ready to go on. So in his mind, he's been told, and actually as a fact, not just in his mind, he's been told by the team that works the show that this is a place where people that are part of that mastermind can go. And then I come in and he said, you know, in his text to me, he was very nice. It was very professional. He said, he said, you came in and we're like, kind of like, you know, this is more important than you. So he's like, I don't understand why you would have a lounge for people that were members of that mastermind and then have some meeting in there where you had to throw them out. It doesn't make any sense. And we straightened it out as well. But it comes back to one thing that I think is really important, and it's one of the four agreements in the excellent book by Miguel Ruiz called the Four Agreements. And it is, it's. Don't make, make assumptions. Like, I should not make an assumption that he was in that room without permission. And he shouldn't make the assumption that I'm just being a total jerk because I, I'm trying to come off as important or something like that. My, my cousin at the. Shouldn't make the assumption that I saw him and specifically decided to blow him off. And he even said, he said, I need to listen. He was talking about Tony Robbins. He said, I need to listen more to Tony Robbins. Who says, what other assumptions or what other scenario could be at play here other than the version that I'm thinking? And so I just want to put out there for everybody, myself included, that it really is important that whatever we do, whatever situations we find ourselves in, whenever something doesn't seem like it's right or we feel like somebody's not being fair to us or treating us wrong. What are the other things that could be at play and what could we do to help assure that there isn't a misunderstanding? Because I was lucky. I was lucky that my cousin said, hey, I feel bad about this. I was lucky that the founders board member that was in the, in that room took the time to reach out to me because otherwise they could just be thinking that I was a total jerk and telling everybody else that. And the same thing can happen to any of us. So so do take the time to think, how can I interpret this situation in a different way so that it might be more positive? Or if nothing else, what can I do to communicate so that I can give this other person the opportunity to clarify and correct any misperceptions or any assumptions that aren't the case? I hope that helps and I hope that you have a fantastic day.
