MoversLIVE - with Wise Ink Publishing: So you want to write a book!...

In this MoversLIVE live‑stream, the host welcomes viewers across Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn and announces upcoming guests from Wise Ink Publishing (Amy and Dara), who are delayed. The host then shares her own experience writing and publishing her upcoming book, Speaking Story, describing the recent copy‑edit, the current typesetting stage, and the upcoming print and marketing rollout slated for November. She uses this personal journey to discuss the strategic relationship between authorship and public speaking: a book enhances perceived authority and can justify higher speaking fees, while speaking (social media, podcasts, live events) is essential to promote the book. The host outlines practical steps for authors to integrate speaking into their book launch strategy and emphasizes that books and talks should be treated as complementary “BFFs.” The session ends with an apology for the missing Wise Ink guests, a note about their 10‑year anniversary, and a promise to reschedule.

Welcome everyone to Our Movers Live. Today we have some really special guests from Wise Ink Publishing. They will be joining us in just a few moments. They are running a few minutes behind, and I did not— since we had to reschedule last week, I was like, I'm starting at noon. I'm starting at noon and, uh, we will set the stage for them as they come join us, but we will be hanging here for a few minutes while we wait for both Amy and Dara. I'm so excited for you to meet them and to learn about Wise Ink, what they do, and to put these pieces together. Because I don't know about you, but speaking and author, right, the book and the talk, they tend to go hand in hand. So I want to talk about that today. I want to talk about why that is and what should come first. We might have different opinions about that as the speaker coach, um, and we are going to talk about some first steps that you can think about and consider as you are potentially bringing to life your talk and a book and how those two might work together. So welcome everybody, I'm so glad that you're here. We are live right now in 3 different places. Eventually I'm really like, "Hello Instagram, can I go live in your platform?" please. But for now, we are live over in the Move Your Audience Facebook group. Hello if you are over there, say hi in the comments if you are watching. Uh, if you're watching on replay, of course I love to see that in the comments because it tells me that you are watching and you get credit, you get extra credit. Not that you care, not that it matters, but for some people they like to know that their coach knows that they watched. I got you. All right, so we are in the Facebook group, the Move Your Audience Facebook group. Hello over there. We are over in YouTube. Hello if you are in YouTube. Great to see you. And we are live over in LinkedIn as well. Hello, LinkedIn. And you know what? I think it's kind of fun to be live in all three of those places at the same time. It's a little bit of what I would call an authenticity checkpoint. Okay? Because we tend to behave a little bit differently on each of those platforms. But for me, I'm really trying to bring the same person in each place. Okay? That's me. Now you're gonna get a little bit more personal Sally over on Instagram. You're gonna get a little bit more strategy, Instagram, talking to my corporate audience over on LinkedIn. But on the whole, who you get in whatever platform is me. So, yay! It's good to see all of you wherever you are. Now, if you have questions that come up as we are waiting for the Wise Ink folks to come join us, just pop it in the comments. I will see them. There's usually a little bit of a delay, so just know that. No worries. I will get to you. If we don't catch it while we are doing our live, I will follow back up with you. So it will come to me, I will see it, and I will be sure to respond. So there's been a lot of interest and a lot of excitement about this, these guests that we're bringing on, the Wise Ink folks and books and publishing, and that makes sense. So I'm going to share a little bit about my journey and why I am doing what I am doing. So for those of you who don't know, I'm working on my book. I just turned in my copy edit. So if you aren't at all familiar with the process of books, I'm learning as I go. Essentially, the book is written and a copy editor went through and did all of the, like, grammar things, right? They went through and really detailed, um, noticed, you know, when rearranged sentences and made suggestions. And so I got to spend last weekend going through and approving or making comments or whatever. That was a big deal. Truth be told, the biggest challenge was the technology and just loading that document because it's a book. It is a weighty, weighty thing. It was also for me to reread what I've written. I started writing this book a year and a half ago. Oh my gosh, it took me a long time to take it from like 70% done to 100% done. That was the part that took the longest time, and in November we will have it in hand. So excited, cannot believe that it's happening, kind of freaking out a little bit, but all in the best way. So, um, while we're— while we are hanging here, I just want to make sure that my Wise Ink people know where to go and they are not lost, because we don't want to have to, um, reschedule again. If we need to, we can do that, but okay, no messages from them yet. Hopefully, hopefully they will be joining us soon. So my book Speaking Story comes out in November, and here's what happens from here. I go into copy edits. It's now in typesetting. In other words, they're putting it into book format and making it look great. We're finalizing the COVID We are and then it goes to print. Okay, and all the while I'm pulling together a marketing campaign. Now let's just pull it back up a notch and talk for a moment about two things: why I as a speaker am doing this, okay, and why authors want to speak. Okay, so both these two things come together. As a speaker, Okay, when you have a book, and we know this, you, you tend to— it tends to just like dial up the authority notch for a moment, right? People say, okay, you're legit, you have a book, clearly you know what you're talking about. Now, I honestly, it's all baloney because anybody can write a book. It's not easy and it takes commitment and you do have to form your ideas and put them into an understandable, digestible experience for people. But, uh, the, the ex— you know, there it is. You've, you've made it into a tangible form, and people take you more seriously as an authority when you do that. Once you have done that, you tend to be able to charge a little bit more for your speaking. And people elevate you, and oftentimes you get on bigger stages because of it. So once you are getting paid a little bit for your speaking and you want to elevate your own authority, writing a book is an excellent thing to do in terms of when to do it. Okay? It's part of the reason I'm doing it. It's been on the list forever, and I just said yes and decided to go for it. Okay? Now, if you are an author, right now and you're like, okay, do I have to speak if I'm an author? The truth is, part of your marketing campaign as an author, as somebody who has written a book, is to speak. So you really need both. Okay, you cannot just be an author anymore these days. You also are a speaker. Now, when I say speaker, I use that term really loosely and really generally. So when you're a speaker, that means you are showing your face and using your voice. In public. Okay, so this is a speaking moment. More than one person is watching this, and I'm showing my face and using my voice, sharing my point of view. When you are promoting a book, you need to show up on social— that's speaking. You need to go on podcasts— that's speaking. You need to host events or try and get on stages to help promote your book— that's all Speaking. So they really go hand in hand and they need to kind of be your BFFs for a year or two. And oftentimes I get a lot of speakers coming to me because they've written a book and they're like, okay, there's a talk here. You realize that this message— people want to take in your message in more than one form. They don't want to just take it in as a book. They want to take it in as an audiobook. They want to take it as an ebook. They want to take you in the experience that you create as a or workshop or training, depending on who your audience is. So we want to give people multiple ways to experience these ideas. And oftentimes your book is going to be your message for a year or two, sometimes more, sometimes less, kind of depending on the rhythm of your business and how soon your next book is coming out. Okay, friends, this has, I hope, been helpful for you. My Wise Ink folks, were not able to join me right now, which I'm super bummed about. They were running a little bit late. And I hate to say this, but I think we're going to have to do this again another time. What a bummer! I'm such— I feel like such a tease that I'm teasing everybody so much. But that is the name of the game. They are in the middle of their 10-year anniversary and are doing a ton of promo right now. And I think we're just caught up and not able to join us right when we thought. So we will re-find a time and I will re-let everybody know when they're here so that you can hear directly from them. But I hope this was helpful to talk about just the idea of speaking and authorship and how those two pieces come together. Your book and your talk, they're BFFs, bring them together. All right, friends, thanks for being here. Bye-bye.
