Speaking Is Leadership in Action — Here's Why Every Leader Needs to Own This | Ch. 2

In this excerpt from the "Speaking Story" audiobook, Sally Koering Zimney introduces the free, podcast‑hosted version of her book and frames her role as a speaking coach. She explains that speaking is a form of leadership, describing how standing up to share a story embodies an idea through one’s physical presence, voice, and actions. Zimney contrasts spoken storytelling with other media, arguing that speaking creates a unique, visceral impact that cannot be faked and demands vulnerability and authentic commitment. The segment also promotes her Unspeaker Simple Storytelling Audio Course and the Be Moved Institute, inviting listeners to deepen their speaking skills and leadership presence.

Now let's get into the chapter.
Chapter 2: Speaking is Leadership in Action. "Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world today." Robert McKee. There are lots of ways for you to share your stories. Speaking them is only one way. You can write it, draw it, put it in a commercial, write a memoir, or plaster it on your blog. All of those ways are fine and good, but in my opinion, they're not quite as impactful as speaking it. There is something about the particular art of standing up and speaking your story, even virtually. When I stand on stage to talk about stories, I'm trying to get people to understand something you can only understand when you experience it yourself. You are standing up for an idea, literally. This is leadership in action. It is the embodiment of your idea in the human form of your physical presence your body, your words, your tone, and your actions.
You can't fake it.
Well, you can try, but it won't work very well. We'll see through it. So it challenges us in a particular way to publicly commit to this idea and story as a part of us. It pulls us out of our anonymity. If you are speaking your story, it's important to note that it means you are not a writer, I mean, you may also be a writer, but that's not what we're talking about here. I want you to shift your thinking from "I'm going to write this story" to "I'm going to speak this story," and watch how that changes you and how you feel about it. There is something about the act of getting up on your feet and saying words out loud that gets your heart pumping in a different way. The risk of vulnerability in speaking puts you on the line in a way that Nothing else does. If I'm gonna stand up and say this, I better believe it. It's gotta be in me because I am literally standing for it. And as we do this, we are talking about leadership as much as we're talking about speaking. It's a beautiful parallel development because the risks we take as leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers reflect how we show up as speakers because speaking is leadership in action. So as you bring your message and story out into the world more, it requires leadership to do it well. And to do it with the kind of impact you really want to have.
That's the end of this chapter of Speaking Story.
