Sam Lambert explains why PlanetScale won't offer a free tier, citing the high costs of running an enterprise database. PlanetScale Managed runs in your own cloud account, letting AWS customers use existing savings plans. One customer cut their daily database costs by $20,000.
First of all, you learn how creatively people can insult you on Twitter. Pretty funny, most of them actually, even the bad ones. But in seriousness, I get about an email every day about people wanting a free version of PlanetScale.
Still? Okay.
Yeah. Yeah. And I think it's extremely unlikely we'd ever do it again.
What about just the economics?
Is it hard to make the economics work when you're paying so much The thing that has been amazing for our customers is with PlanetScale Managed, it runs inside their account. So if you're a significant Amazon customer, you get to negotiate incredible commits with saving plans against these machines and just save extreme amounts. One database on PlanetScale, its daily operational cost went down by $20,000.
You have really lived it, uh, in like a super interesting way.
