A short documentary-style YouTube video (created/uploaded by Sarah Hindman) recounts the establishment of the State of Israel in May 1948, the subsequent global ingathering of Jewish people that produced a rapid population boom, and how Israel—despite limited resources, difficult climates, and regional political tensions—used scientific and engineering methods to overcome environmental challenges and become a world leader in clean technology.

The streets rang with joy as the State of Israel was established in May of 1948. Jewish people from all corners of the world reveled in the creation of a national state, a period that is referred to as the ingathering of exiles. For thousands of years, the Jewish people were living as a scattered people among the nations, a time filled with the horror of pogroms and the exterminations of the Holocaust. The idea of Israel brought hopes of safety. This ingathering, though filled with elation and pride, also contributed to a large population boom that transformed the small, barren land into one of the most densely populated countries on Earth. The people of Israel were forced to put down their party hats and develop the land between Africa and the Middle east, with its complex climates, unique environmental landscapes, and, of course, some not so happy neighbors. Despite the lack of resources and political pressures, Israel took advantage of scientific and engineering methods to pull themselves through the environmental challenges and come out as a world leader in clean technology.
