Removing a duplicate bank account QuickBooks Online

Linda Artesani shows how to fix a duplicate bank account in QuickBooks Online. If you accidentally created two accounts by mixing manual entries with bank-feed imports, you can undo all the feed entries at once, delete the opening balance, disconnect from the bank feed, and remove the empty account. Manual transactions must be deleted one by one.

Hi there, Linda Artesani, Artesani Bookkeeping. Wanted to do just a short video because we just completed one today doing one for the community. And I thought for my blog today, I could just show it in desk and online because we did it in desktop. The question was in desktop. And I'll take you to the questions. So let me share my screen. Let me just take you to the questions. So the question was actually here. Duplicate accounts. I need to delete one of them. And it's a QuickBooks Desktop question. You can see that the person has Accountant Desktop and the client has Desktop, regular Desktop. She has a client who manually enters transactions and also downloads some of the transactions from her bank feed. So she apparently downloaded the transactions from the bank feed and she created a new bank account. So instead of downloading them in the existing bank account, she downloaded them into a new bank account. And when she did this, she had manually entered them in the other bank accounts, and now she's got duplication because she manually entered them in the regular bank account and then downloaded them from the bank feed into a brand new bank account. So, you know, she wanted— the person wants to know how to get rid of them. So it's a desktop question. Great question. Um, you know, we went through all the steps how to get rid of them, and there's ways around it. You can watch our YouTube video, which I'll share in the, in the post. Let's go to online. So I'm going to take an account here. I'll just take the savings account. So we're going to pretend that this is a duplicate account here that the person— go to the register. There's not a lot of transactions here. Oh, not any. Let's pick a different bank account that just has the one. Okay, we know what we'll do. Let's go back here and let's put these all in. So I'm just going to batch enter these. This is what the person did. They downloaded them into the bank. I'm just going to enter them all into the bank. So now the bank account is going to have transactions all populated in there. So I'm going to go to register now. And here they are. They're all in here, all the transactions that they put in. And maybe this bank account should have been named, you know, Union Bank, and it was named savings account. So now they've got this here and they didn't mean to put it in there. Like, oh crap, I didn't mean to put all this in here. This doesn't belong. It's already in the Union savings account. So how do I get rid of them? This is what's nice about online as opposed to desktop. In the bank feed, you can't really do this in the bank feed in desktop, and that's why we did the workaround in the desktop in the video. But in QuickBooks Online, you can actually undo what you did. So here they all are, all the things I just put into, into the account. So I can just come over here and click this plus sign, real safe way to do this, right? And then I'm just going to undo them all. They're all going to be gone. So now we go back to the register. They're all sitting here still in the for review, right where they were when I started. We'll go to the register, be just that one opening balance entry into the bank account. And then you could obviously delete this and then remove the bank account. So I could just come in here, one click, delete. Done. And then I can come over to Accounting, Chart of Accounts, find that savings account. There's nothing in it. You can see the balance is zero. You can do the registers to make sure. And I could just go back here and just remove it, right? We don't need it. It's a duplicate. We don't need it. I'm probably going to need to undo it from the bank feed first. So let's go back here. Going to come over to the pencil, edit the account information, disconnect from the bank account from on save. So now that's disconnected. You can see it removed it from this list. Come over to Accounting, Chart of Accounts. Find that savings account, come over to View Register, Delete. Now the bank account's gone. You won't see it here anymore. And now the one bank account that it should have been is here and you're good to go. So that's how easy it is to do it in the online version. A little bit less clicking and steps. Pretty simple. That will remove anything that was put into that bank account that was put in as a put in as a bank feed drop-in. If you put them in manually, you're gonna have to go and edit, click Delete. So it's the only caveat to that. So I hope that's helpful. It's a real fast way to remove a bank account if you've used mostly all bank feeds to put it in, real quick way to get them out of there. So that's just a little tip on that. And you also— I'll also share the question from the community with the desktop version. I hope that is real helpful, and I will see you next week. Bye now.
