3 Email Automations Every Subscription Box Owner Needs

Sarah Williams walks through three email automations for subscription box owners: a waitlist flow with behind-the-scenes content, a new-subscriber sequence that confirms purchases and upsells, and an abandoned-cart series with product images and urgency. Each flow takes 1-2 days between emails and generates recurring revenue on autopilot.

Good morning, happy Monday everybody. I'm back in the office today, feels good to be home. Uh, let me know in the chat if you're here, I would love to say hi to you. Let me know, um, on a scale of 1 to 5, how your— if you're, um, how your Mother's Day went, if you are a mom or if you have a mom or all those things. I would say 1, low-key, 5, we did all the things. So I'm going to tell you that my Mother's Day was one low-key. Um, we did nothing and it was fabulous. Um, I had been travel— traveling, so I was in Charleston last week. I got home Thursday night. I took my son on his very first college visit on Friday. We went and visited the University of North Texas in Denton, and I'm just gonna say that that was, um It was interesting to do that with your oldest child for the first time, right? And so I'm feeling a little bit like, okay, he's like legit a grown man now, but also he's still my baby. He's still like that 3-year-old Jackson. He's not this 17-year-old kid anymore, um, to me. And then Saturday I spent the whole day in Abilene, Texas, um, watching my daughter play basketball. So I had just I had gotten home from Charleston. I went to Denton, I came home, we went to Abilene. And now I was like, what are we doing on Mother's Day? And I looked at my daughter, I said, nothing. Can we do nothing? She goes, sounds good to me. What would you like for breakfast? And she made me breakfast and we just literally hung out at home all day. And really, really glad I needed Stephanie. I needed a much, much needed low-key Mother's Day as well. I'm not one of those people that can just do all the things all the time. Like, I need the downtime. So good morning, everybody. Today we're talking about 3 email automations that every subscription box owner needs. Now, what I want you to do is grab your notebooks this morning. I want you to make some notes. I want you to get these set up this week. And if you already have these 3 automations already set up, I want you to go back and look at them. Because what happens with us, and we do this sometimes, is we set up something months, even years ago, um, that we never go back and look at. And so if you've already set up these automations, which some of you very well could have done that, um, you— it might be time to go back and review what you have in these automations. Okay, so, um, let me come over here and say hi, and then we're going to jump right in. Grab your notebooks. We're going to, we're going to get busy this week. Like, we're going to get— we're going to hold you accountable. I also have chosen a winner for last week's Monday Momentum Challenge that I gave you. So much good stuff happened from last week. So I'm really excited about that. And I've chosen a winner to have a one-on-one with me. So we're going to talk about that. Good morning, everybody. Good morning, Andrea. Good morning, Lexi. Good morning, Stephanie. Hi, Diane. Lexi said, I did all the things. 5. Mother's Day was a 5. She did all the things. That's great. Good morning, Angel. Hi, Tara. Good morning, everybody. Hello, April. Good morning from Missouri. I can't see you, but if this is you, I want you to click the little link in the description of the live. It'll give StreamYard permission and then I'll be able to see who I'm talking to. Like, I can't— good morning. I can't see who you are. And it's because I'm not on Facebook. You're on Facebook, but I'm on what's called StreamYard. So you have to give StreamYard permission for me to see you. All right. Good morning, everybody. Good morning, Damon. Good morning, Paula. Good morning, Brenda. Good morning, everybody. Okay. So let's, let's dig into last week. Okay. Last week, I challenged you to create a social media template of your own, and we went through a little bit of this together. And yes, Tracy, I can totally see you now. So yes, we went through a little bit of this together and I, I showed you just a quick template that you can put together and we kind of talked through it. The thing about having a template or having a plan is that you can execute it so much better. So the challenge last week was to schedule your social media and to create a template for for yourself that was relevant to your business, relevant to your social media, relevant to what you wanted to share. And so I challenged you, we went through it a little bit. If you missed last week's episode, go back and listen to that from Monday. If you're in Launch Your Box, it's in our guide section. If you're not a member of Launch Your Box, well, hey, come join us. But if you're not a member of Launch Your Box, you can find it in the feed right here on my Facebook page. Okay, go back and listen to it. Create a plan. If you're a Launch Your Box member, you had a place where you could post your plan, and it could be chicken scratch. Some of you got fancy on the computer, some of you made a Trello board, some of you just wrote notes out. All— I got all kinds of different ones. It doesn't matter what format, it doesn't matter how pretty it is, um, but you guys made a little template, and then I asked you to post your template in our group. And from that group, I went back and I picked a winner just scroll through and I picked, I just scrolled through and stopped and I picked someone and I thought, I'm going to see if they did it before I give them 30 minutes of my time. I'm going to see if they took their time to actually implement their plan. Okay. And so I can see that this person is live with me right now. I saw them make a comment in the chat. So the winner is here with me today. And I went over to her Facebook page. Last night, and I look— I pulled her plan up and I looked at what she did. She did most of it. She didn't do all of it. She did most of it, um, but the effort was there, and I could tell that she's on her way to making this a habit. And so I'm gonna go find her comment real quick because this is my winner of last week's challenge that gets a 30-minute one-on-one with me. And that's Jessica. So Jessica, you were the social media template that I landed on when I just scrolled the page and hit stop. And then I actually went over to your page. I believe it was Hannah and Henry or Henry and Hannah. And I took a look at, I took a look at your post based on what you mapped out and how well you executed your plan. And so really excited to jump on a call with you. I feel like I can help you in so many ways. With your social media. I can tell that you're just starting based on the amount of followers that you have. But I want to tell you that you're doing a great job with what you're doing. I saw you. I listened to one of your lives. I think I listened to your live from Wednesday. And so I think that you're doing a great job and I'm excited to jump on a call. Jessica, will you email me and then I'll get you my calendar and you can set up a time and we can book a call for your 30 minutes. So I'm excited to get to talk to Jessica. So thank you everyone that took the time to take— make a template, post the template. It's about accountability more than anything. You guys know this. I can teach you all the things, and I try to teach you all the things all the time, but if you don't actually do the things, it's for nothing. Like, it's for nothing. I need you to implement the things. And what I loved when I went to Jessica's page was that she didn't have a lot of engagement, but it didn't stop her from doing the things that I asked her to do. She has a page of less than 300 followers, and she made a plan and she executed the plan. And it's going to take execution of these things to grow that page. You're not going to wait till you grow to, to post things. You have to post things to grow. You have to do the work to grow. And I know it feels sometimes like I'm doing this work for nothing, but you're not. And I promise you, you're not. I am living, breathing proof that you can start something from scratch and create an incredible business. I've done it not only once, but I've done it twice. Okay, I have created 2 multimillion-dollar businesses from scratch. No investors, no big chunks of money to throw out there. I created it from scratch. I started organically. I worked in paid advertising, and now I'm here to teach you how to do the same. I am not special. I am not anybody different than all of you. I'm a mom of teenagers in a small town in Texas that loves what I do. That's it. Okay. And so that's what we are doing. That's what we are doing. Every Monday I show up and try to give you some encouragement to take the step forward in your business. And, and that's what we're doing. So today we're going to talk about email. Last week we talked about social media. Social media and email go hand in hand. We're focusing on building our list. We're focused on building our following. We're focused on building our audience. Okay? And so that goes hand in hand. Building our following on social media feels like a daunting task. I know, I know it does. Building our email list can also feel like that. And then we're building our email list. We've been talking about popups and SEO and all these things inside Launch Your Box, but now we've got an email list. Now we've got people on that list. What do we do with them? What am I supposed to be doing? There's 3 email automations, and I've got them pulled up in my notes here that I want to talk to you about that all of us need to have set up. And if you already have these set up, fabulous. I want you to go look at your email flow that you do have set up as we walk through this. Okay, grab your notebooks. We're going to talk through it quickly, and then I'm also going to give you some more information where you can go deep dive into it. Okay, so the biggest thing with your email automations, an email automation is simply this. There is a trigger by an action. So somebody does something on your website and it triggers an email automation. So that means we're not sending out a campaign every time this trigger happens. Our email CRM is automatically triggering this automation. So all we have to do is set it up one time. I call this our rotisserie chicken. Okay, set it and forget it. Like, you know that infomercial? We're going to set it and forget it. So what we need to do is set this up, set up our triggers, set up our email flow, and then we walk away and we go pack our boxes. We go show up live, we go work on our social media, we go do all the things in our business that we need to do. This is our rotisserie chicken. We set it and forget it. Okay, so I should, I should definitely pull out the, the chicken hair clip. Have you all know about the chicken hair clip? Just because it's Monday and I'm feeling like I'm in a good mood, we're going to pull. So this is my chicken hair clip and we only pull this out every time. But because we're setting up our email automation, we're going to wear the chicken hair clip today for, for our live, for the rest of the live this morning. This is our chicken hair clip. Okay, this is actually fried chicken, not rotisserie chicken, but it all works. It's still chicken. Okay, so the best thing that we can do, the best thing that we can do is make it simple. Some people will tell you that you need to have a 6, 9, 10, 15 email automation. I call BS. You don't need that. You don't need that. Okay, I make things really simple because if I know if I make them complicated, I'm less likely to do them. I'm less likely to implement. If I had to sit down and create a 6 to 10 email automation today, I would not do it, right? Like, yeah, I got other things to do than sit down and write 6 to 10 emails. And so what I like to do is make them really, really simple. You can always elaborate on them later, but when we get started, let's just make it the easiest that we can make it. 2 to 3 email automation, 2 to 3 email. 3 is my favorite. I love to do a 3 email automation on every automation that I do. Keep it simple. Okay, so that's your first rule of thumb. We're gonna start with a waitlist automation. So the waitlist automation is, I've got my waitlist up. So I've got my waitlist up right now because you guys know I just went through a launch, I sold out. Yay, sold out! And now I'm closed. So I have my waitlist up. So what I wanna make sure is that I have an email automation triggered when someone joins that waitlist. Okay? So you can do lots of different things. I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna give you some ideas for these emails so that you don't have to think on a blank screen. Okay? The purpose of your waitlist is to capture those people that have said, yes, I want in. We're collecting the people. This could be prior to you launching. So maybe some of you are launching in June. You have a waitlist set up right now. You're collecting people that are saying they're interested. Or maybe you running an open-close cart where you're closed currently, you're sold out like me. I have a waitlist up. Okay. And so I'm collecting those people. But what I don't want those people to do is just be collected in a bucket and they don't hear from me. I want to set up an automation so that I can nurture them until I have my cart open. Okay, so the first email on a waitlist automation is, you're on the list. We need to let them know whatever they came for, that they have fulfilled that obligation. Okay, you're on the list. Let them know that they've successfully joined your waitlist and that here's the details on how you can become a subscriber. Keep an eye on your email box. You'll be, you'll be notified as soon as we have an open spot. So you're giving them the details of what it means to be on that waitlist. Okay. In this email, every email I like to set up for my product-based business, I like to have images because product-based businesses are very image-focused. Okay, so I'm, I'm usually going to do an image, probably me holding the box. I need them to connect me, the face of the brand, the subscription box that they're signing up for, and the all the boxes behind me. So I'm creating some excitement. So you could do a behind the scenes picture of packing. You could do a picture of you holding a box. You could do a pick a picture of just like the box stock, like nothing in it. And so you want to make sure that they understand what they signed up for and that has your subscription box front and center. Now you can offer a purchase of a past box. This is something that we did during my launch and we now have it in our waitlist flow. So I have some past boxes that I have extras of, and so they can't get into my subscription right now, but I'm going to let them know that, hey, if you want a box, grab one of my surprise boxes and it's one of my past boxes and I'll send it right to you while you're waiting. I want them to have a little taste of the fun while they're waiting. So email number 1 was, hey, you're on the list. This is what it means. Here's a picture of me in the box. And then, oh, by the way, did you know you could grab one of our past boxes and I'll ship it to you? Email number 1, super easy. It's like a short paragraph, a picture, a short paragraph, a button to buy. So easy. Email number 2, subject line could be something like, you don't want to miss this box. Okay. And it's a picture of the past box. Now you can open the box, show the box because the box is already out there. Don't forget to grab one of our past boxes while you're waiting. You could also give them a little behind the scenes. You could tell them why. This is my why around why I started the subscription box. You need to nurture them to really want your subscription box. So when the time that they open that, the time you open your cart, they're like in. So I want to keep showing them things about my subscription box. So this one could be, don't miss out on this box. You could have a reminder about your launch date if you're pre-launch. This is pre-launch, like we're opening the cart June 12th. And then here's why I started the monogram box. And you could tell a little story about why you started it. Email number 2, super easy. Add a picture, add a picture. Email number 3, you could do some behind the scenes of packing the monogram box. I'm just using the monogram box because it's mine. Let's go behind the scenes. Show them the start and finish. Show them how they got to the, the box got made, the box got packed. Let them in. They need to connect that personal connection with the box and you and themselves. Okay, show the behind the scenes. Michelle, if you don't have any past boxes, show them some making of your current box. Do you have some products? Do you have some samples laid out? Do you have fabrics? Do you have colors? Do you have anything that would connect the making of that subscription box to them. How did it go? Maybe it's designing the box, maybe it's designing the products, maybe it's shopping for the products. Whatever that is, connect the story of how this box came in this waitlist email automation. 3 emails. Do 2, do 3, at least do 1. Set it and forget it. Your trigger is that they have joined the waitlist, and then automatically they're going to get this flow. This is your waitlist automation. Okay, you need to share about your box before you sell the box. Make sure you have an automation set up on your waitlist. Okay, that's number 1, waitlist automation. Number 2, new subscriber automation. When someone signs up for your subscription for the very first time, they need to have an email sequence sent to them. They need to know all the things. Okay, so when someone checks out, so our trigger is going to be purchased the subscription box. That's our trigger. And now we're going to set up a 2 to 3 email automation. Okay, Jody says, how long between emails? I would do 1 to 2 days, 1 to 2 days. You want to nurture them. You don't want to space it out too far because they're going to forget what they signed up for and they're not going to, they're not going to be sure why this is in their box or why this is in their email box, right? So 1 to 2 days, space them out 1 to 2 days. Okay. New subscriber automation. This is triggered when someone subscribes to your box. Okay. You do have screenshots and swipe files. In your training library if you're a Launch Your Box member. Just, just know that what I'm talking to you about, you have more resources inside your training library. Okay. It's under the marketing module. This one says something like, you're in, they've signed up. Or you could say something like something exciting just happened. Include an image of like you in the box again. You in the box are always great pictures. We need to know information. What questions do you get put in your inbox all the time? When will my payment draft? When will my box ship? What can I expect? How does this process work for them? We need the information. We need the details in this automation. This will severely cut down on the customer service emails that you get when someone brand new signs up for your box. How many people get those emails? When's my box gonna ship? That is the first thing that people ask. How can I change my size? When can my box ship? Whatever those questions that you constantly get are, that's what we need to put into this email. Okay? It's going to reduce the DMs, the texts, the emails, all the things that you have to answer. Get it in this first automation. Okay? And then email number 2 The goal for this is to generate some additional revenue. You're like, but Sarah, they just signed up for my box. They just signed up. Yeah, they're already in. So the goal for this one is to generate some more sales. Okay, I do this by trying to upsell new subscribers. So I have 3 different levels of the Monogram Box. If someone subscribes to the basic box, That's its own trigger. And the goal would be to send an email upselling them to the combo or the ultimate. Hey, I noticed that you signed up for the monogram box. Do you love t-shirts? Do you love t-shirts and earrings? Did you know that the combo or the ultimate box has a t-shirt and earrings in every single box? Hit reply and I'll upgrade you. Super easy for them. They'll upgrade. They are brand new to me. They might not even understand the differences in the types of box that I offer. So I'm going to upsell them on that and I can put different triggers and you can get, you can get as complicated as you want. I can put a trigger that if they sign up for the combo box, I send them an email about the ultimate box. If they sign up for the monogram box, I can send them an email that tells them about the other two boxes. If they sign up for the ultimate box, I can send them an email not to upgrade them because they have the highest level, right? So you can set up different triggers based on the automations that you're going to send out. Okay, you can get as complicated as you want, but I'm keeping it simple. Upsell them. If you only offer one level of your subscription, this is a great time to offer them a pass box, just like we did in the waitlist. Offer them a pass box. If you don't have a past box, offer them something else from your shop. Maybe you have a great new collection of patriotic tees that you want to share with them this month. That could be the automation, and it'll just run all month long. Okay, if you don't have any other products to sell them, then you'd have to connect with them. Tell them who you are. Tell them why you started your business. Tell them that you're a mom, you've got two teenagers, you live in a small town in Texas, um, and this is why I started my subscription box. Tell them something, get them connected to who you are. That's gonna create higher retention rates for you. We've got them in, they've purchased, great, let's keep them. We need to connect with them to keep them. Okay, that's our new subscriber automation. 2 emails right there. You can go deeper however you want to. That's gonna trigger when someone signs up. We need to give them the information and reduce our customer service time. And then we also need to create some more love for who we are and what we do. Okay. Our third automation, and these are three that every one of you need to have set up: waitlist, new subscriber, and abandoned cart. Abandoned cart automation. Everybody needs an abandoned cart flow. You've all been shopping online and you've all gotten distracted before you finish checking out, right? Or this is my, this is, this is my, uh, biggest issue. I thought I checked out, I got distracted, but I never did. And I'm like, why isn't my stuff showing up? All the time I'm like, it should have been here. And then I'll go check my Amazon cart or something and it's still sitting in my cart because I never fully checked out. I got distracted in the middle of checkout. And so without an abandoned cart automation, you're just leaving money on the table because so many people get distracted in the checkout process. They have to go get their card and like, I'll do it later, or different things like that. So we want to put it back in front of them. And again, I have the setup of this for Klaviyo, some swipe files, and more information in the training library if you're a Launch Your Box member. So as you're working through these this week, if you're a member, I want you to go into the library and pull this information for you. It's going to help you get things set up. If you're not a member and you're listening right now and you don't have these set up, it's a no-brainer to join. I'm going to help you through the setup of these inside our training library. And so this abandoned cart automation email number 1, this email is triggered when someone puts items in their cart and leaves their website without making the purchase. And the subject line says, we've saved your cart. Like, oh shoot, I forgot to check out. With Klaviyo, they allow a dynamic flow, which means that the email will include a picture of whatever's in their cart, which is so cool. So if I'm over here shopping for Starbucks coffee and I get distracted and I don't check out, my email is going to have the coffee that I had put in my cart. So it's going to remind me what I was shopping for. It's a dynamic flow. Okay. And so basically it's real simple. Click here to complete your purchase. You don't have to fluff it up. You don't have to put a lot of words. You don't have to do anything. Just put the item that they were shopping for. They put it in their cart for a reason. Something happened when they got to the cart where they didn't complete their purchase. Just put the thing they wanted back in front of them. Okay, and that's a few hours. That's only a few hours after they put it in their cart and left your website. Then a day or two later, you can send them another email. This is an automation that's set up that says your cart is about to expire, um, or this coffee wants to go home with you, or this coffee needs to be in your belly, something like that. Or your chicken, your fried chicken hair clip is lost without you. Make it something funny. Okay. And then what you want to do is you just want to make it easy for them to check out these. This automation is so simple because you don't have to write a lot of copy. You're just putting the thing that they already liked. They already wanted it in back in front of them. And you can do a third one. One more time. Your card expires in 4 hours. Like you can do 3 urgency. And what's amazing is how easy this is to set up. And every time someone goes to your website, put something in their cart and doesn't check out, it automatically is hitting them. This is your rotisserie chicken. You set it and forget it. This is your chicken. Set these 3 automations up. Number 1, you're going to, you're going to get all the people that are joining your waitlist. To get to know, like, and trust you. Number 2, you're going to get every new subscriber an email with the fine details of their subscription. Number 3, you're going to get anybody that puts anything in their cart and forgets to check out, they're going to get it back in front of them not once, not twice, but 3 times because you're going to set up a 3-email flow on your abandoned cart. And you don't have to do anything. You can be out there packing boxes. You could be working on your social media. You could be writing the next email campaign. You can be doing something else. Take the time to set these 3 things up and it's going to create a strong email list. And when you have a strong email list, people are going to buy from you every single time you send an email. We have to build in those behaviors with these automations first, and they're easy. These are 3 things that all of you can do. And if you have an abandoned cart email sequence set up already, I want you to go back and look at your email flow. I want you to go into the training library and look and see what I use and look at the swipe files that I've given you. And I want you to compare it and I want you to see if there's anything that you could improve on that automation, on any of these 3 automations. And if you don't have one of these set up, I want you to get that done by Friday. Okay, so let's go get something set up. Let's go let these work for us. Let's set our rotisserie chicken this week because we got a ton of things to do. Setting up these automations, like, I wish I would have pulled my stats before I got on this call of just these 3 automations from the revenue that I generate from these 3 automations every single week, and I don't have to do anything. I don't have to do anything. I've already set them up. Every single day when someone goes through one of these triggers, one of these 3 triggers, I make money automatically. That's what I need you to do, okay? Automatically set it and forget it. Go get them set up this week. Jessica, I'll be talking to you soon. All right. Okay. Y'all have a great rest of your Monday and I'll see you next week.
