3 Take Aways from the Super Bowl for Small Business Owners

Sarah Williams shares three lessons for small-business owners: develop thick skin when success attracts critics, focus on audiences that resonate with your vision rather than trying to please everyone, and use storytelling to connect with customers like WeatherTech and Lay's do in their ads.

Good morning, happy Monday everybody. It's time for Monday Momentum. Today we're going to talk about a big event that happened last night. We're going to talk about the Super Bowl. And you know, it's funny because I like— it's, it's not funny, it's interesting. And maybe it's a little nerdy of me, but I always look at things in a kind of small business owner lens. It could be while I'm out shopping, it could be what I'm watching, it could be an event that I'm at, but I'm always looking at things through this small business owner lens because it's something that I am just deep into every single day of my life. Right. And so as I was watching the Super Bowl last night, I took 3 big takeaways that I want to share with you today. That we can all relate to as small business owners. So that's what we're going to dig in today. And a lot of them are mindset. Okay. So a couple, couple of them are mindset. I'm going to say a lot of them. There's only 3. A couple of them are mindset, but I want to share it with you and I want to have an open discussion with you today about it. So if you're watching me, let me know where you're watching me from this morning. I would love to say hi to you in the chat. Well, we're getting everybody on here. I can see my YouTube people are showing up. I can see my Facebook people are showing up. And let me just talk about YouTube for a minute. My YouTube channel has grown tremendously over the last several weeks. And so if you are brand new watching me on YouTube, just say new. I would love to just really say hi to you. I have— I'm getting growth on YouTube right now and it feels really, really great. So if you're new to me, I would love to say hi to you, especially on the YouTube, because the YouTube— I just aged myself— on YouTube because it's been growing pretty rapidly. For me recently. So I'm glad that you found me. I'm glad that you're here. Let me say hi to everybody this morning. Good morning, Christina. You can see on this, on the screen, the little red play button, that those are people watching me from YouTube right now. The little Facebook button means you're watching me from Facebook. Good morning, Lexi. Hey, Andre. Hi, Dana. Good to see everybody. Good morning, Angie. Good morning, Shereen. Good morning, everybody. California, California. I love me some California. Good morning. Hey Carmella. Good morning Rebecca. Good morning from Northern Virginia. Good morning Maggie. Thank you. I have been on YouTube for a little bit, but I started running some YouTube ads and what's been crazy is that I'm really finding people that, that haven't found me before. And so I'll talk about that maybe another month or so. I want to give a little bit of data before I talk about what I've been doing over there. Good morning Brenda from Chicagoland. Hey Becky, upstate New York. It's so cold up there. What's happening up there? Good morning Amy. Good morning Andrea. Hey Amanda. Good morning Claudia. Good morning Jenny. Hey everybody. Good morning. Good morning. Okay, let's dive into it this morning. Let me know in the chat, did you watch Super Bowl last night? And I'm very aware that people may have not watched the Super Bowl last night, like everybody on the planet hasn't watched the Super Bowl, but let me know. Just say watched or you can tell me not watched, because there's a couple of things that I really took away from the Super Bowl. And I want— and we're not going to get controversial. I don't do controversy here. We're going to talk about some controversial things today, but I need everybody to be polite to each other in the chat today. Okay. And to me, I don't do mean girl energy. I don't. I'm all for kindness and respecting each other's opinions. So let me just Say that before I start talking. My team is probably in the chat like, what is she about to say? Because I don't do conflict, I don't do controversy, but I think that we need to talk about it. So this is— and I want, I want you to open your mind today. Okay. So number one, let's talk about the Kansas City Chiefs. Whether you're a Chiefs fan or not, I want you to understand that there are people that don't want to see you win. Okay, there are people that don't want to see you win, especially when you're in your winning season. When you are winning, winning, winning, there are going to be a whole bunch of people waiting on the sideline to see you fail. And that's what we saw last night. And I have to say that I was a little bit guilty of it too. Not that I didn't want the Chiefs to win, but I'm always rooting for the underdog. I didn't have a dog in the fight last night. I just always root for the underdog. I want to see someone win that hasn't had a chance to win. But I want you to understand that there are always going to be people around you that don't want to see you win. And we have to separate ourselves from those people. Okay. And sometimes that's our friends. And that's when it stings. And sometimes that's our family. Okay, and that's when it really like hurts a lot, is when our friends and family don't want to see us win. You know, there's something that is really kind of hits me hard is silence is the— silence can be the loudest thing in the room. Do you know what I'm saying? When people are happy for you, they're expressing their happiness for you. And, um, but the silence is also very loud when someone is silent in the midst of your happiness. And, um, and it doesn't go unnoticed. And you've probably experienced this. Maybe there's somebody in your family that's genuinely not happy to see you win. Maybe you have friends that are genuinely not happy to see you win. And I have a feeling that that's really what the Kansas City Chiefs were feeling yesterday. There was a lot of people that didn't want to see them win because they were in their winning season. People are sick of seeing them win. People are going to be sick of seeing you win, and you have to be okay with that because not everybody in our circle is our biggest cheerleader. Not everybody in our circle is rooting for us. And if you're experiencing that, I want you to know that It's kind of normal. It's kind of normal, especially when you start to elevate in what you're doing, especially when you start to have your winning season like the Chiefs have had. They've had a huge winning season, and not everybody wants to see them win. And I want you to understand that you're going to experience the same thing in being a business owner when you hit a level of success. There are people that are generally not happy for you, and you got to be okay with that. You got to just walk away from it. You cannot let it affect your success, okay? And I've experienced that, and I feel like, um, to some extent it's affected my friendships, to be honest with you. I, I know a lot of people, I'm friends with a lot of people, but my closest friendships, it has affected. And it's kind of a sad realization. It also kind of makes me be more of an introvert than I already am. But there are people in my life that genuinely want to see me win, and I, I can name them. I could name them right now. And there are people in my life that their silence is piercing. And you either have to say, I'm gonna play small because the people in my life can't handle me playing big, or I'm gonna play big because that's my dream and that's who I am and I'm made for more. And wherever this lines up for you, you gotta know that it's okay. It's not a reflection of you. It's mostly a reflection of them and where they're at in their life. They're unhappy, they're unsuccessful, they're not in a place where they can genuinely be happy for you. But that's not on you, okay? That's not on you. That's not your burden to bear. That was not the Chiefs' burden to bear last night, that there were a lot of people that didn't want to see them win. That's not— they go out there and they play that game and they play it the best that they can and they, they want to win. They're not going out there saying, maybe we shouldn't win today because it's someone else's turn. Maybe we shouldn't win today because, you know, people in my circle don't want us to win. You got to let it go. You got to let it go. Okay, so that's my thought number 1. There are people that don't want to see you win, especially when you're in your winning season, and it's okay. That's kind of what— it's like this thick skin that I've had to get. I'm like this super sensitive Enneagram 4 Pisces. I'm this super sensitive soul, right? And I think that's been the hardest thing for me to learn as my businesses are successful. Um, and it's hard to understand. But I also need you to think about that yourself too. When you see other people win, it's not a reflection of your failures. Some people get depressed or hurt or upset when they're seeing someone win over and over and over again, but I need you to take that in and be inspired by that instead. Okay, and if you're the Enneagram 4, if you're the super sensitive Pisces or Cancer, like, you got to get thicker skin and know that it's you and not them— and not know that it's them and not you. Okay, that let them theory, right? Okay, oh, look at all my Pisces in the chat! Okay. Number 2, let's talk about Kendrick Lamar. This is where it might be a little controversial. Let's talk about Kendrick Lamar. People that don't understand your story or your vision won't get what you're trying to do. People that don't understand Kendrick Lamar hated the halftime show. And whether you liked it or didn't like it, the fact that so many people felt the need to go onto social media and just bash it was baffling to me. It hurt my soul. You see, Kendrick is not your typical rapper, okay? He's a lyricist. He tells stories with his songs. Okay, so a lot of people said, I couldn't understand what he was saying. He's telling a story. These are words. These are not catchy phrases. He's not, you know, he's not your typical rapper where you're going to, like, hit the beat and you're going to just— you're going to know the words because he's telling a story through his message. Okay. And he had the biggest stage in the world to do that last night. And he honored America on that stage. Everything was red, white, and blue. He had Uncle Samuel L. Jackson narrating his story, which was genius. He was honoring America as a Black man in America. He stood there and was proud of his country, and that's not something we've seen in a long time. So that's number one. I want you to take that away, okay? Number two, everybody on that stage was fully clothed. Everybody on that stage was fully clothed from head to toe. He did not over-sexualize that performance that we have seen over and over and over again at these performances, no matter what genre. They're performing and they're coming out in skimpy clothes. Okay, almost, almost said something I shouldn't on Facebook. He did not oversexualize this performance. And even when SZA came out and Serena came out, they were fully clothed. Okay, you gotta respect that. Yet the negativity and the hate for his performance was so crazy to me. He told a story in his lyrics, and these songs have won Grammys. And if you're not a Kendrick fan, that's okay, but why do we have to continue to hate on people that we don't understand? He went out and had a classy, respectful performance He told his stories with his performance. He was true to himself and his country. And yet we had to turn around. The internet is blowing up, bashing his performance, that it was the worst Super Bowl performance in history because those are not his people. Those are not his people. And what I need you to understand is that not everybody that sees what you're doing are your people. Not all of your audience that follows you is your people. And that's okay. It would also be like— I love Kendrick Lamar. It would also be like a country artist being out there on stage. I don't listen to country music. I probably wouldn't enjoy it that much. It might be cool, I'd watch it, I would, but I would never go and bash a performance because I didn't— it's not my preference. I thought what Kendrick did was awesome. He was true to himself. And when we show up in our businesses and we have a vision and we have a story and we're doing our thing, you have to know that not everybody gets it. Not everybody is your person, and you have to be okay with that too. You have to move along and keep finding your right person. The people that understand Kendrick Lamar loved his performance last night. The people that didn't understand Kendrick Lamar didn't like his performance last night, and that's okay. You're not for everyone. Kendrick is not for everyone. And that's okay. And he's okay with that. And I'm okay with that. So I need you to understand that from that halftime performance, that you're going to find your people. And when you find your people, they're going to love what you do. And you don't need a big pool of people to love what you do. You just need the right pool of people to love what you do. And anybody that doesn't like what you do can keep scrolling. Anybody that didn't enjoy the halftime performance could have gone to the bathroom and gotten a snack and done whatever they needed to do. But instead, we live in a world that feels like we need to be internet keyboard warriors all the time and spew our opinions negatively all over the, the internet. And you're going to have that. You're going to face that. And if you haven't faced that yet, just wait. Someone's going to bash your prices. Someone's going to bash your products. Someone's going to bash your personality. Guaranteed. The same way they did Kendrick. Not everyone's your person. And that's okay. You delete, block, delete, and release. I would say bless and release. Bless you. Like in the South, we say, bless their hearts. Bless and release. Bless their hearts, they don't get it. They don't get what I'm trying to do. They don't get what I'm trying to sell. They don't, they don't understand it. Bless and release. Block, delete, and release. We don't need it. We don't need it in our life. All right. Okay. Now, number 3, the commercials. If you were watching last night, tell me in the chat which ones were your favorite commercials. You know, I got busy during the second half working on a couple of things on my computer, so I didn't see all the commercials in the second half, but I was watching all the commercials in the first half. Tell me, tell me in the chat which ones were your favorite commercials. I asked this question on my page last night because I was curious of what everybody was really, really looking at. And there was really two things that stood out to me for the commercials. And I want you to relate this to your own brand, your own products, and your own business. Okay. The most memorable commercials were the ones that either entertained us. Like, my favorite was the WeatherTech commercial. I said that last night on my, on my page, the one with the old ladies living their best life. I love that. And I never would have guessed it was a WeatherTech for floor mats and things like that for your car. It was perfect. And I will remember that brand because that, that commercial entertained me. Okay, so it was the entertainment. And then It was— I also loved the Lay's commercial with the potato and how the girl grabbed the potato and planted it and watered it and cared for it and then gave it back to the, the farmer. But I want you to, I want you to have two takeaways from this. People either want to be entertained or they want to feel connected to your brand. Okay, so there were a lot of people talking about how the stories were the best one. You know, the cancer patient stories, the one with the potato, the Lay's. There were some other ones, the Mountain Dew one. I was like, what's going on here? That entertained us. How can your social media, how can your presence either entertain us or tell a story that we feel connected to. That's what I want you to think about in point number 3. People want to feel connected to us in some way. And if we just tell the story of how our products make it to the hands of our subscribers, like, how powerful is that. How powerful was that Lay's potato commercial? That I was thinking of that potato being like the product in your subscription box, right? Like, we source the product, we design the product, some of us are making the product, and it goes on this journey, and she nurtured it, and she grew it, and she made more potatoes from it. And I think we've got to tell the story of our subscription box more often. Because people don't connect that with the products that they get in the mail. And so how can you tell the story of your product and how it fits in the subscription box? I want you to lean into some of that, that we really love, that we really connected with, because now every time I look at a Lay's potato bag, I'm thinking about that story. Every time someone receives their box off their front porch, How can they connect that to this business owner that created this beautiful thing? And now I have my hands on it. I want us to tell the story more. Okay. And I know that we can all do that. What's our why? How did things— how did this happen? How did I get here? We've got to tell that story and we've got to make it really prevalent. We need to get in front of as many people as possible. Yeah, we don't have $8 million for a 30-second commercial like they did last night. But how could we get that story, get our story, get our box story in front of more people? I want you to think about that. So these are my takeaways from last night. Number 1, there are people in your life that don't want to see you win, and that's okay. Number 2, not everyone's your person. People that don't understand your story and your vision will never get what you're trying to do, and you have to let them go. Find your people the way Kendrick did. And number 3, let's tell a story with our brands and our products the same way that we love the commercials that told the story, because now we feel connected to that brand in some way. All right. I want you guys to have a great week. Take your lessons from the Super Bowl, apply them to your week, and let's keep moving forward. Let's be inspired by each other. Let's want to see each other win. Because when I see our members winning, I know it's possible for the next person. All right. All right. Y'all have a great week and I'll see you soon.
