4 Simple Steps to Start Your Subscription Box Before You’re Ready

Sarah Williams says stop waiting for perfection. Pick one specific customer, build a simple waitlist page, share your decisions publicly, and launch messy. Early adopters give you real feedback that planning never will.
You've been dreaming about your subscription box, but something keeps holding you back. Maybe it's your website, maybe it's your follower count, or maybe it's the idea that it has to be all perfect before you launch. What if I told you that's exactly what's keeping you stuck? In this episode, I'm sharing 4 simple steps that will help you take real action, not someday, but today. You don't need more time. You just need momentum. Let's go.
Welcome to the Launch Your Box podcast with weekly tips, tricks, and strategies to start, launch, and grow your subscription box. Now here's your host, Sarah Williams.
Welcome back to the Launch Your Box podcast. Let me ask you this: what are you waiting for? The perfect website? A polished logo, 100 followers, 1,000 followers, 10,000 followers on social media. Here's the truth. You don't need to be, air quotes, ready. You need to be in motion. You've probably heard me say this before, but clarity comes through action, not before it. So if you're sitting there in research mode, overthinking your packaging, obsessed obsessing over fonts or logos, I want to give you some tough love and say you don't get momentum from planning. You get momentum from doing. And I want to talk to you about how to do this. We can do this step by step with what you have right now. So let's talk about your first step. Your first step is not your logo. It's not even your box name, but it's getting crystal clear on who your box is for. Not a vague, broad group of people, but one specific person. So I want you to ask yourself, who do I want this box to be for? What does she love? What problem is she facing right now? When you pick one person, everything else becomes clearer. Your content will speak directly to her your product selection will make more sense and your voice becomes consistent. Your messaging becomes consistent. The problem is we like to go broad because we think we can attract more people that way, but we tend to just be noisy in a loud room. But if we can figure out who that one person is that we want this box to be for, figure out what she loves and what problems she's dealing with right now, it's going to become very, very clear. Now, step 2, you do not need a full-blown e-commerce website to get started. That is something we tell ourselves all the time. I need to have it all set up before I get started. What you do need is you need one page, and that's your waitlist page. One simple landing page to tell people who your box is for, what kind of items are going to be inside, when it's coming, and how they can be the first to know. And that's it. It seems so simple. We want to have it all done. We feel like we need a homepage and a product page and a subscription page. And then we've got to figure out, you know, how to connect apps to run recurring payments. That all takes time and that will all come in time. But what we need to do right now is not spend weeks building product pages, tweaking your themes, buying different domains. You can launch a waitlist in just a few hours and you can use that to start collecting people while you're building the rest of your website. And then you're going to talk to those people and you're going to bring them along behind the scenes as you're building. But we don't do that. We build it all first and then we start to collect people. And you're ready to launch and you haven't spent enough time collecting people. And this is where most people stall out because they think that they have to have this polished professional website. They have to have a polished and professional social media page. You have to have it all figured out before you can even press go. But that's wrong because your audience doesn't want perfection. They want connection. I'm seeing it right now. I'm getting ready for Subscription Box Week and I have all these nice polished professional graphics for Subscription Box Week. And then I threw in some kind of behind the scenes video at our warehouse. And those are the ones that are converting. People don't always want the perfect polished things. They want real. They want to connect. They want it to be relatable. So I want you to show behind the scenes. I want you to talk through your product picks with your audience, your selections like this or that, this color, that color. Share packaging decisions as you're building the packaging. You don't have to build it and then be ready to launch. Take them along the journey with you. Even if any of your ideas are not final, let them help you. It's giving you content, it's giving them buy-in, and you're making progress openly and not waiting for the perfect moment. Let them vote on colors, let them vote on box names. Every time you document your process, you build trust and interest from your audience. And then when you're ready to launch, those people are already invested. They've been a part of the journey. You didn't just sell them a box, you invited them into the process. So I'm going to give you your little permission slip today. You're allowed to launch your box before it looks perfect. You're allowed to launch messy. Some of the most successful subscription box owners inside Launch Your Box, they launch with no logo, no great packaging, just a waitlist and a dream. Some of them launched with 10 subscribers and grow. Some launched with 1 subscriber and now have over 1,000. You're going to learn so much by doing and not waiting. You're going to make mistakes. We all make mistakes. I still make mistakes every single month, but that's part of it. And that's how you get data. That's how you get feedback. And most importantly, that's how you build momentum. Imperfection action beats perfect planning every single time. So here's your Friday Fuel. It's your little homework assignment for this week. You're ready. Pick your person. Launch a waitlist. Show behind the scenes and launch messy. You're more ready than you think you are. You've got everything you need right now to take the next step today, tomorrow, not someday. I want you to remember that. Start now. Build that plane while we're flying it. That's how we're going to make more action. That's how we're going to get more results. And we can't improve something that we never start. If this episode gave you the nudge that you needed, I want you to send me a DM. I want to hear about it. And if you're not inside Launch Your Box yet, what are you waiting for? Come join us. We'll help you start, grow, and scale that subscription box business of your dreams. I'll see you right back here next Friday.
