Adding 1000 New People to My List in 5 Days

Sarah Williams grew her email list by 1,000 teachers in five days using a KingSumo giveaway with leftover inventory and a $100-per-day Facebook campaign. She spent roughly $0.50 per lead, segmented the list in Klaviyo, and built a nurture sequence before launching a July subscription.

Good morning. Happy Monday. I feel like it's one of those Mondays after a holiday weekend that kind of hits us a little harder than a normal Monday. But good morning. I'm here to give you your daily Monday morning dose, your pep talk for the day. Let me know that you're watching here. It's a fresh start this week. Whatever happened or didn't happen last week, we're going to make it happen this week. But I want to talk to you about something that I've been working on. And you know, I'm not, I'm not too proud to say that my, I haven't been working on my audience building like I know I should. So that's my first bit of transparency. But I did something over the weekend that I'm really excited about to share with you today because any one of us can do it, whether you're brand new or you're a seasoned subscription box owner like myself, any one of us can do that. So good morning everybody. I can see YouTube YouTube is blowing up. So thank you all for watching me on YouTube this morning. I'm really close. I'm really close to being able to be monetized on YouTube. I just need a little bit of— I need a little bit more watch hours on my channel. Super close. So thank you for watching me on YouTube. That will definitely count towards my watch hours. Good morning, everybody. I see a few Facebookers over there. Good morning, everybody. Good to see you. We're going to talk about it today. Let me know on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being no big deal, 10 being it hit me hard. How is your, how has your Monday hit you after the long weekend? I think that, I think that I took a long weekend, which I very much needed after the launch. I gave all the team a long weekend. We worked a little bit because there's just some things we have to do. But This Monday hit me particularly hard. It hit me a little bit harder. Like, I didn't want to, I didn't want to get out of bed this morning. So, but we have to and we got to get going and I've got your little dose of Monday Momentum for you today. So let's talk about it. So we're going to talk about, I have a subscription launch coming up this month and it is for one of my 3 subscriptions. So I have 3 subscriptions. I have the Monogram Box, I have our t-shirt club, and then I have this little baby subscription that is our teacher subscription. And it's kind of the stepchild of the, the 3 subscriptions, or I would call it the middle child because I'm a middle child. So I always feel like the middle child has this complex about, you know, not being the oldest and not being the youngest. So that's me. So I would call this the middle child. I have a couple hundred subscribers in my Teacher Tea subscription. That's why I call it the baby subscription because I have thousands in the others. So sometimes it loses a little luster. I don't put a lot of effort into it. It just kind of goes and, and then, you know, I don't give it the attention that I need to. Right. So let me know in the chat if you have kind of fallen off on your audience building efforts. Let me know in the chat. Just say fallen off. But I had kind of fallen off with the plan that I had put in place at the beginning of the year to really drive traffic and increase the number of subscribers to this subscription. And so I needed to do something, but most of you know that I just came off a really hectic month in my business, in my coaching business. So for the month of June, I was on vacation for a week. Then I went straight into Sub Summit where I was there for a full week. Then I went to market, then I came back and I hosted Subscription Box Week, which was crazy good. Then the day I ended Subscription Box Week, I went into my full open cart launch for Launch Your Box. And now we're here. And now we're here. And so I didn't have the month of June to do what I needed to do for this launch this month. So I had been crazy busy and I was like, okay, I gotta get it together. I have this launch on my calendar for the third week of July. And I have done nothing to get ready for it, so what can I do? So for me, I pull things out, I make a strategic plan, and I get intentional about what I'm doing. So if you've fallen off, if you're like, okay, my launch is looming over me, instead of pushing it back and pushing it out and putting it off, it's like, what can I do in the time that I have? And that's really what I decided to do. I have 3 weeks before launch. Here's what I'm going to do. We're gonna talk about one of those things today. I'm gonna talk about what I did, and that's what's happening. And Alison has it right. So she says, I entered the KingSumo teacher giveaway. So cute. This is what I did. I started the giveaway last week and I was late on it already. Like I had planned to start it, on the 1st or maybe the 30th, I don't remember. I was gonna start it, but I was at the end of my launch. So I have 3 weeks to make something happen. So here's what I did. I started a KingSumo giveaway. And if you're a member of Launch Your Box, we have a whole training module in the training library in the audience building module on starting a KingSumo giveaway. So we put together, excuse me, we put together some product that I had in the shop. Every one of these things in this picture was left, left over from a different subscription, okay? So I had the lunch tote from my April subscription. I had the paper clips and the little portfolio thing left over from my December subscription. I had the little calendar and sticker set left over from my January subscription. I have the little bracelet keychain left over from one of my Teacher Tea accessories. I have the teacher tee left over from a teacher subscription. And then we just threw in a little teacher notepad that we had for teacher gifts for the end of the school year. So this became my giveaway. I needed to be specific with this giveaway. Okay, so what I want you to do, lesson number 1 in this conversation today is when you're running a giveaway, we need to target it to our perfect person. So who is the person that I'm trying to attract with this giveaway? It's a teacher. So everything about the— I have tons of cute stuff. I could do inspirational tees, I could do tote bags, I could do cups, but that wouldn't necessarily get me the right person on this list, if you understand what I'm saying. That would give me a lot of women that like inspirational tees and tumblers and cute bags. It wouldn't give me the teacher. I need the teacher to be opting in for this giveaway. So that's where the teach, teach, teach came on the t-shirt. So that was the center. That was the hub of me making the giveaway. And so I started with that, and we just turned that graphic into several other graphics. So this was the graphic. We just laid it all out there. Let me show you how we can turn this into multiple graphics, okay? Using Canva, boom, there it is shifted off to the side at another angle with some text. Boom, there it is again, um, with— well, why isn't it coming up? Hang on, hold please, technical difficulty. Here's another one, here's another one, here's another— this one will not show up. I don't know why this one is not showing up. I have another one that has a turquoise background. It's not popping up here for me, whatever reason, I don't know. Um, but we had that one image and we just created some graphics around it with different backgrounds, different text And we also have one that was a video. And so what I ended up doing was, um, oh, it was showing— it was showing to y'all. That's weird. Okay, y'all saw the turquoise one. Okay, so those were the graphics. So we just did a flat lay of the stuff we were going to give away. We made some graphics so that I could run some ads, and then we had some posts available. So Amber is my director of operations for Framed, for my retail business. She had started posting about it before I had the ads up and running because I was still at the end of my Launch Your Box launch. So she was posting it on our page and we were getting very little traction. We were having, I had maybe 20 or 30 signups on the giveaway just from posting it on my page. And so when I took a look at that last week, I was like, okay, we gotta go. Like we should, we need hundreds of people signing up for this and it's not getting much traction on my page, which tells me that it's not getting seen. And also it might not be hitting the right audience. I have a, I have an audience that they're not all teachers. So how do I get this out in front of my audience? And also when we launch something, I want to launch to new people, right? I don't want to keep exhausting my existing list. If they're teachers, they know I have a teacher subscription. They haven't signed up yet. I need to find some other people. So I decided to put $100 a day. Behind this ad for 7 days. So I still have today and tomorrow it's going to run, but in 5 days I got over 1,000 new people on my email list that are teacher-specific. Okay, and I want to show you something else that happened, and here's all I did. I ran an Advantage Plus campaign in Ads Manager. Okay, so I'm running the Advantage Plus. I set it up on KingSumo the same way that I show you inside the Launch Launch Your Box training library. So if you want to set it up, go set it up in KingSumo. KingSumo is free. There is a paid version, but I still use the free version. So don't think that you have to pay for it. Okay, so I set it up in KingSumo. I called it the Ultimate Teacher Giveaway. I wanted the name teacher in the giveaway so that it would find my right person. And then I, we created the ad set. And so I did an Advantage Plus campaign for $100 a day, and I put 5 different images into that one ad set. So all those images I showed you plus the video, I put into that ad set. It all had the same copy on every one of them, and I let Facebook find me the perfect person. Okay, so when you set up an Advantage Plus campaign, you're not putting in a custom audience, you're not targeting interests, you're not using one of your Custom audiences, you're saying, hey Facebook, go find me the perfect person for this ad and it will do its thing. Okay, so it's called Advantage Plus. It's basically Facebook's AI taking a look at who's clicking on this, finding more people like the people clicking on it, and it really adjusts over time. So for $100 a day, I've spent $500 at this point. I have over 1,000 new people on my email list. So I basically paid $0.50 for those teachers to be on my email list, each one of them. If I walked down the street and there was a crowd of teachers, would I give them $0.50 to give me their email address? 100%. That's my perfect person. Okay, so I want you to think about that. What are you willing to pay to get the perfect person into your world? That's what I was— that's what I was trying to do. And I didn't know because I didn't know how it was effective it was going to be on the Advantage Plus audience because I didn't know if Facebook knew I needed to target teachers. But because the giveaway was very teacher-specific in the items and because I named the giveaway the Ultimate Teacher Giveaway and the copy had teachers in it, that's, that's what happened. Now I want to share my screen with you and I want to show you something else that started to happen that I hadn't seen on my ads in a while. So I'm going to show you this. Okay, so here's, here's that turquoise ad in my ad set. Okay, what I want you to see is I have— this is just one, but I actually have another one that's performing better. But what was happening— this isn't the one I meant to show you— I was getting people tagging teachers that they knew. I have another ad that there's probably 30 tags of people that are probably teachers. So somebody was seeing this and they're like, oh my God, this is awesome. This teacher, teacher gift bundle here. Let me tag, let me tag a teacher that I know. So that was starting to generate more tags. It was shared a lot of times. And so This was happening, it was giving a lot of momentum. Now once Facebook could see who was clicking it, they were going— that AI goes after more of those same people. So it's understanding your person that's actually clicking and entering your giveaway, and it goes after more people. So you don't have to overthink it. An Advantage Plus is, um, an— is an audience that Facebook finds for you. It's the easiest way for you to set up an ad, okay? It's the easiest way for you to set up an ad, um, because you don't have to build your custom audiences. So it's out there finding it, and here my results are over 1,000 new people. And on top of that, and I paid 50 cents per person, I have 750 new followers between Facebook and Instagram in the last 5 days. So part of the KingSumo giveaway is that they can get extra entries for liking your pages that you connect inside the giveaway. So I put my Instagram, I put my Facebook, and I'm giving them extra entries if they will go like it. So I think I have like— I don't, I can't remember, but I think there's like 7,000 entries from these 1,000 people because of all the extra activities that they did. Click on my website, now I've got them in my pixel. That's one of the extra activities. Go like my Facebook page. That's another activity. And I give you 3 entries for that. Go follow me on Instagram. I give you 3 more entries for that. So I have 7,000 entries, but I have 1,000 new people on that list that now I can market my subscription launch to. So this is step number 1 in my strategic plan. And I'm going to give you step number 2 later because we're— I don't have my results from number 2, but here's what I want. Sue, thank you so much. She said, yes, I tagged teachers I knew. Yes, I hope they signed up too. So, so this is what I want you to do. I want you to think about a giveaway for your business. Okay. Think about a giveaway for your business. Now, a lot of times people will say that they don't convert But in this case, it's the best way for me to find that perfect person. If someone's entering in that giveaway because it's so specific, they are more likely than not a teacher. I need teachers on my list. And here's what I know about teachers. They work with teachers. So the more teachers I get, the more people they work with, they're going to see their cute t-shirts and I'm going to, and I'm going to get that. Okay. So They're on my list and now I have a chance to warm them up before my launch. So now that I have the list, the giveaway ends tomorrow. I'm going to start to nurture them. Okay. We can't just do this cold and blind. We can't just get them on a list and then I'm going to hit them during launch with all those crazy launch emails that I ask you to send, right? I need to nurture them and I'm going to nurture them over the next couple of weeks so that when I show up to sell to them, I have already served them. I'm going to talk about my teacher style guide, like how to dress up in the classroom but still be comfortable. I've got some other things that I'm going to share in there. So I'm going to do some serving to this audience before I show up and sell to them. Okay, so this is what, this is what I'm going to do. Now, if you saw on my picture that I just used stuff I already have, right? So you're like, well, Sarah, I'm new, I don't have stuff from a past box, what can I do for my giveaway? If I'm brand new and I have not sold products before and I don't have a plethora of products laying around my warehouse to use for this, I would go and purchase some items to give away. And I did this when I started my subscription. I just went to Target and I picked out a tumbler and I picked out a cute bag and I picked out some little accessories. These were all things that I was going to have in my subscription box, and I put a giveaway together to attract person that liked all those things because that's what was happening in my subscription box. So if you don't have, if you don't have products laying around that you can use for a giveaway, go get some. You can, you can do this without your own products. It doesn't have to be your own products. You can create a box that's going to be similar to that and, and, and do the giveaway that way. Just think about what, what that budget is for your box. You want it to align with your subscription what, what you're going to sell so that you can attract the right person. If they like that box that you're creating for the giveaway, more than likely they're going to like your subscription box. So you want it to be aligned with that. You could also give away like a 6-month subscription. I have done that before, um, sign up to win a 6-month subscription, but you've got to have something to show them. So for me, at that point, I'd already launched and I could put like 6 different boxes up here and give them a 6-month subscription. Okay, so what I want you to think about is, what could I do for a giveaway, and when could I put this on my calendar so that I can start being strategic about audience building? This just happened to be on a holiday weekend, and that actually worked out in my favor because a lot of people were off work for an extended period of time. Teachers are out of school right now, so they're scrolling more than they are when they're in school. So I want you to think about how a giveaway can align perfectly for your audience to show up. Okay. So if my teachers, if we were in the first week of school, this would have not done well. They don't have time to be on social media. They're trying to get their classrooms ready. They're teaching all day. They're exhausted at night. They're figuring out the next day. They're not on social media as much as they are right now because they have free time. And so I want you to line this up. Also, the holiday weekend really aligned with me because people were off work and could see that. Okay. So I want you to think about our next holiday weekend is going to be Labor Day. If you were not launching until, say, September, October, Labor Day weekend would be the perfect opportunity for you to run a giveaway. I like to run giveaways for 7 to 14 days. Really, 10 days is the sweet spot to give it some juice. And so that's what we want to do is we want it, we don't want to run it too long to where it gets stale. We want people to be excited about it. We want some urgency there. If you've learned nothing from me through the last month of watching me launch, urgency is key for getting people to sign up. And so we want to create some urgency so they don't come back later. Um, but that's where we want, that's where we want to, to pull this in. So Jasmine said, do they offer automation? That's my problem, writing emails. So automation, I'm gonna pull this, this list lives in Klaviyo right now. So when my giveaway's done tomorrow, I'm gonna pull this list into a CSV file and I'm gonna load it into Klaviyo. And then I'm going to set up some campaigns. I'm just going to do some campaign style emails right now, but you can put them on an automation. Right now, are just signing up to enter the giveaway. And I have a whole email set up for you in the Klaviyo training on what to email them after the giveaway as far as announcing the giveaway and then selling your subscription on the backend. I'm not gonna sell, I'm not gonna use that template that I have in there because I wanna nurture them. I wanna sell to them during the launch. So when I talk about those launch emails, I won't be sending my launch emails to my whole list throughout this period. I will be sending a few of them, but because this subscription is very specific to the right person and that person is not my whole audience, I don't wanna, I don't wanna fatigue my non-teachers in my audience. So what I wanna do is I wanna make sure that I segment this audience in Klaviyo. These are my teachers and my strategic plan, my next step in this process of building the audience Those are all gonna be teachers as well. Anyone that's ever canceled from my teacher subscription, I'm gonna put in that audience as well. I have another giveaway that I did a year ago when we were launching that those are gonna be my teacher audience. So I'm gonna very strategically pull all this teacher list building into an audience together. That's who most of my emails are gonna go to during my launch so I don't fatigue my existing audience that are not teachers. So step number 1, I need you to plan a giveaway. I want you to plan a giveaway. Okay. It is one of the easiest ways that we can start building our audience when we're brand new. And it's also an easy way to get a jump right before your next launch if you already have an audience like me. So whether you're new or seasoned, get a giveaway on your calendar. Okay. Number 2, let's figure out what we're going to put in it so that we can attract the right person for that giveaway. We don't want everyone. We want our ideal customer for that giveaway. Number 3, it benefited me greatly to put some ad spend behind it, to get some ad budget behind it and run ads. The 30 people that I had for 3 days wasn't going to make a difference in my launch, but 1,000 people because I put $100 a day behind it, that's going to make a difference in my launch. Those are new people that I can target during my launch. Okay? So don't be afraid to put some ad spend behind it. And then number 4, I want you to nurture those people before you launch. So you don't get them in, they go cold, then you start sending them 20 emails. Okay, let's nurture them. Let's let them learn about you. Let's let them connect with you. I'm going to show them some behind the scenes at the warehouse. I'm going to show them my teacher style guide. I have a whole blog written on it. I don't have to recreate this wheel. I'm going to share some of our teacher social proof comments, how, how people love their— why teachers love their, their subscription. I'm going to share a lot about what we do for teachers. And some products that I have for teachers in stock. I'm gonna, I'm gonna nurture them from now until launch. So that's what we're doing. Start a giveaway. One of the easiest things you can do. I've got a whole training set up for you inside Launch Your Box. You can go watch it and you can have your giveaway set up in an hour. All right. Okay. That's your momentum today. Let's keep building an audience. Even if you've fallen off like some of you told me in the chat, we can get reinspired, we can get re-motivated. All we have to do is get strategic with it and a giveaway is a perfect way to start building your audience again. All right. I'll see you guys inside Launch Your Box later this week. Y'all have a good day.
