How to Start a Subscription Box in 8 Simple Steps

Sarah Williams outlines eight steps to launch a subscription box: define your problem and customer, build an email list, plan three to six months of themes, source products with at least 40% profit margin, create packaging that controls costs, execute a two to four week launch, and batch pack with quality checks. She emphasizes starting with audience building before product selection.

Let's jump into these 8 steps. Step number 1, we've got to define the problem you solve and who you serve. So who is your ideal customer? We need to think about that very, very clearly when we're getting started out. What problem are you solving for them? What desire are you tapping into? What emotional connection are you providing? Is it convenience? Is it creativity? Is it self-care? Is it a curated surprise that saves them time? Once you know your person, everything else becomes easier. The problem I see with this is that we want to put products first. Step number 1 is not products. We want to figure out what products we want to sell and then we'll find someone to buy them. We need to define the problem that you solve and who you serve right out of the gate. So that is step number 1. Step number 2, once we know who we're gonna serve, let's start building our audience with those people in mind. So we're gonna set up social media if you don't already have it, simple to do. And we're gonna start creating content to attract our ideal customer, that person that we want to serve. So we need to start building our audience early. We tend to wait too long for this. So I want you to start now. Share your ideas on social media, even if it's not perfect. We can do polls, we can do sneak peeks, we can do a this or that, like what would you choose? All of this helps you understand what people want. And then once you start building on your social media, I want you to start moving those people over into an email list. Your socials build awareness and visibility, but your emails are what's going to convert into subscribers. And we're gonna build a simple waitlist page, and I'll tell you that in just a minute. Now, step number 3, we're gonna curate our first 3 to 6 months of boxes. Now this is the fun part. This is what everybody wants to start with, but I'm going to encourage you to go back to step 1 and make sure you know who your ideal customer is. Who are we going to sell to? Planning your boxes is fun, but I want you to plan before you start to buy anything as well. So we're going to map out themes for our first 3 to 6 months boxes. We're going to assign product ideas to each month. We're going to make sure it flows with our ideal customer and it feels on brand for the season of life that our person is in who we're serving. And this clarity really helps you from scrambling every month and it gives you kind of this big picture overview of your subscription. And if you want to really dial into this and get some help, I have a free workshop. It's called the 6 in 60 workshop and I walk you through mapping out 6 months of box ideas in just 1 hour. It's my system that I use for my own subscription box and that I've taught thousands of box entrepreneurs how to do. So go ahead and grab that, um, I'll have the link for you in the description. Now step number 4, buying and pricing. We're going to aim for no less than 40% profit, okay? So once you have your themes mapped out, now you can start sourcing, now you can start researching, you can reach out to those wholesale vendors, you can order some samples. You want to start building relationships. but this is also going to help you figure out the cost of these items so that you know how to price your subscription box. So when you price your box, I want you to aim at a minimum of 40% profit margin, and I want you to keep working towards that 50, 60, 70% profit margin. We can get there faster as we grow, so don't stress too much if your profit margin is 40, 45% when you start out. We're going to go ahead and build to that 60% profit margin that you want so badly. Okay, we need to start with those healthy margins because if you go lower than that, there's just not enough money to help you scale, and that's our goal here. Now, step 5, I mentioned earlier about a waitlist. Step 5 is we are going to build a warm, ready-to-buy waitlist. So instead of just jumping straight into selling, I want you to build a waitlist. This is basically a pool of people who are excited, curious, interested in your subscription box. You're going to use social media posts, engagement, sneak peeks, all the things to drive people over to the waitlist. So your call to action would be get on the waitlist and you're going to nurture them in their emails, send them updates, behind the scenes, theme reveals, sneak peeks, personal stories, your why for starting your subscription box, and make them feel like they're involved in the creation of your box. A warmed up waitlist is so powerful when you launch, these people are ready to buy first. It gives you instant sales if you do it correctly. Now, step number 6, we're going to determine our packaging. So people tend to start with this first, so let's make sure we bring it back down to step 6. You've got to know what's going inside your box to determine the size of your box, to determine what kind of packaging to have in your box. We want to choose a size that fits your items well but doesn't add unnecessary filler or unnecessary shipping costs. You can start with blank boxes, or you can go custom right away, but I want you to keep it simple and keep the box as small as possible. Remember that your packaging plays a huge role in the unboxing experience, but we can uplevel it as we go. Step number 7: now we're going to plan our launch. Got all the components in place that we need. Now we have to plan our launch. I want you to give yourself 2 to 4 weeks to build excitement coming up to your launch. You're going to do this on socials, you're going to do this on emails, you're going to talk about sneak peeks and it's coming soon and the problem that it solves. You're going to show up consistently 2 to 4 weeks before you launch, and then you're going to put it out in the world. All that momentum you've been building up, you're going to have a heck of a launch week, you're going to get your first subscribers, and it's all going to come from the momentum you built prior to launching. Now you've launched You got all the things going. What's step number 8, Sarah? You're gonna pack and ship your first box. Finally, you get to pack and ship your first box. Batch packing, a simple workflow. Do some quality checks with every box so that they're going out complete. And I want you to document the process. Photos and video are going to help you market the next box because just because we're at the packing and shipping point We're going to rinse and repeat this month after month. It's a huge moment and I want you to celebrate it because you get to step 8 and you've just created your subscription box business. If you follow these 8 steps, you're going to go from idea to shipping your first subscription box with a lot of clarity and confidence. And most importantly, you're going to do it in order.
