Is Your Website Costing You Sales? 5 Must-Fix Mistakes

In this inaugural "Friday Fuel" mini‑episode of the Launch Your Box podcast, host Sarah Williams delivers a concise, 10‑minute walkthrough of five common website mistakes that sabotage subscription‑box sales and provides clear, actionable fixes. She begins by emphasizing the importance of the website as a conversion engine, then outlines each error: (1) an unclear above‑the‑fold message that fails to state what the box is, who it’s for, and why it matters; (2) reliance on text over visual proof of the box’s contents; (3) an overly complex checkout with too many plan options; (4) pop‑ups that appear too early, interrupting the visitor’s first impression; and (5) lack of visible social proof such as reviews and subscriber photos. For each mistake, Sarah explains why it hurts conversions and offers concrete steps—clarify headline copy, showcase real product images, streamline plan choices, delay pop‑ups by 10‑15 seconds and use teaser tabs, and embed testimonials directly on the sales page. She wraps up with a quick recap and encourages listeners to tackle one fix at a time, reinforcing the series’ promise of short, actionable guidance for growing a subscription‑box business.

Welcome to the Launch Your Box podcast with weekly tips, tricks, and strategies to start, launch, and grow your subscription box. Now here's your host, Sarah Williams.
Welcome to the very first episode of Friday Fuel, a brand new weekly drop inside the Launch Your Box podcast, and it's all about delivering quick actionable steps that will help keep you moving forward in your subscription box business. Now, these episodes are going to be short, like 10 minutes or less, and I'm going to pack them with clarity, with strategy, and with action, and that little push you might need to end your week strong. So today I'm kicking things off with something a little bit foundational. We're going to talk about your website. So whether you're just building it, maybe you've recently launched, or maybe you started it and it's kind of gathering dust. Your website plays a major role in converting your visitors into subscribers. But if you're not doing that, you're losing sales. When we don't have conversions from our website to sales, we are losing money every single day. Recently, I did a live training over inside Launch Your Box and I reviewed a handful of member websites. And what I saw was the same issue popping up again and again. And these things are totally fixable and can make a huge difference. So I'm going to walk you through 5 mistakes that could be holding you back with your website, and I'm going to tell you how to fix them. All right, so let's start with number 1. We've got to nail the first impression. And when I say first impression, it is that screen— we call it above the fold. So when you're on a website, it's that first screen before you ever have to scroll up. It's, it's the top, literally, and it's the homepage that loads before your user scrolls. So whatever is on that page before you scroll, that's called above the fold. Now, this section is mighty because you have a few seconds to capture people's attention, and we have to know some things by looking above the fold on your website. Do we know what it is? Do we know what your subscription box is when we look above the fold? Do we know who your subscription box is for? And do we know why they need it? So I need you to ask yourself these questions. What is it? Who is it for? And why do they need that? And I know that seems like a compact lot of information, but that's why that visual above the fold spot is so, so important. So maybe you've got a cute image, maybe you have a catchy headline, and that's great. But if I don't know immediately what you're selling and if it's for me, I'm bouncing. I'm never gonna scroll below the fold. And you don't want your ideal customer to have to scroll to figure out what this is and who it's for. So take a look at your homepage. Is it clear? That's what I need you to find out. Okay, number 2, use visuals that show, not just tell them in text. A lot of times people will just scroll and look at visuals. They will never read anything on your website. So you need to have a picture, a picture that sells faster than a paragraph. Okay, so you've got to show me what's in that box. Not just a logo, not just pretty stock photos. I want real photos of real boxes throughout this page. I want them opened, I want them beautifully arranged. I want you to think about flat lays, I want you to think about unboxings, I want you to think about past boxes stacked up, or maybe a carousel of the last 6 to 12 months on that page. I need to see what I'm getting with your subscription box. If you only have like lifestyle photos with maybe a model holding the box, or maybe you holding the box, that's not enough because the images have to tell the story. They have to say, here's what you're getting and here's why you love it. You can put all that in text, but remember, if you've got those just scrollers that are looking at images, you're never going to capture their attention. Okay, number 3, we got to keep it clean and simple. So your checkout should be a no-brainer, but a lot of times when I get to people's websites and I get to checkout, there are too many choices at the very last step. So I want you to think about it. If someone's ready to buy, don't make them overthink. And what I'm saying is you're asking them to choose between 1 month, 3 months, 6 months plans, and that creates decision fatigue. They've already decided they want your subscription box. Now they're going to check out. Now I have to decide what plan I want, and now I'm stopped in my track. Okay, so I want you to audit your checkout. Can it— can you simplify it? Can you reduce the amount of options? Can you highlight the most popular plan? Is the pricing clear? Um, we've got to eliminate bouncing at this stage. So if I already get to this point, I'm telling you I'm interested in purchasing. If I'm leaving at checkout, it's because you gave me too many checkout options. So I want you to keep your checkout clean and simple. All right, number 4, delay your pop-ups. I mean, seriously, they can be powerful and they're great and I want you to have them, but they can also be totally annoying. So the mistake that I kept seeing while I was reviewing these websites is that the popup hits before I even know what the site is like. Literally, I'm loading your homepage, your homepage loads like in 1 or 2 seconds and the popup is immediately there. It's like somebody walking up to you on the street and asking you for their, for your phone number without even saying hello. That could be awkward. That could be pushy. And you know what happens? They immediately click off. Like, I'm just trying to see what your box is about and now you're asking me for my email and my phone number. I don't even know you yet. And so it's kind of invasive, it's kind of pushy. And so people immediately X out of that, and we don't want them to do that. Instead, let's wait 10 to 15 seconds before showing your pop-up. Let visitors read or look or browse a little bit, get to know your brand, and build some of that know, like, and trust factor in before you ask them for their information. And one tip that I gave during this live was if you're using Klaviyo like I do for my email CRM, you can use the little teaser tab option on your popup. So if I click out of that, it's gonna slide over to the side of my screen and a little tab's gonna be there. So if I continue to scroll and look and I like what's going on, I can always click back on that tab and come back later. Okay. Now. Number 5, I need you to add some social proof. For some reason, we trust what other people love, and your website should reflect that. Like, I'm so guilty of going on Amazon, and I will never make a purchase until I read the reviews. I am also a Facebook shopper, so when I have ads and stuff in my Facebook feed and I'm interested, I will never click to the website until I read the comments and see if people actually have purchased this product and if they're happy with that. We need to have customer reviews. We need some photos of happy subscribers. We need some screenshots of comments or DMs. Those build confidence with potential subscriber. And here's the thing, your social proof shouldn't be buried in a separate reviews page. It needs to be right on the page of your website, right on that sales page. You can bring it to your homepage right under the box info. You've gotta weave it in naturally. So if you don't have like testimonials or reviews yet, just grab some sweet words of encouragement or kind words from your social media and put them right on your website. It's really gonna help people feel confident in their buying decision. Now, I know that was fast, and that's the point of Friday Fuel. So let's do a quick recap of your Friday Fuel website fixes. Number 1, be crystal clear above the fold. What is it? Who is it for? And why should they care? Number 2, I want you to use high-quality visuals and images to show exactly what's inside the box. Don't make me guess and don't make me have to read. Number 3, make the checkout process as simple and seamless as possible. Too many options do not help your buyer. Number 4, give your pop-up some breathing room. Don't ask for too much too soon. And number 5, add social proof that builds trust and answers the question, is it worth it? So you can walk through all 5, or you can pick just one of these areas and make an update this weekend. You don't have to burn it all down and overhaul everything. Start with where you're at and take one step to improving it. All right, progress in your business comes from doing just the little things consistently and showing back up here for Friday Fuel. That's part of it. Thanks for hanging out with me today. I'll be back next week with another quick dose of clarity and momentum to keep you moving.
