Making $30k in 24 hours with ONE 4th Quarter Promotion

Sarah Williams made $30,000 in one day selling a holiday gift-box preorder. She ran the same promotion for five years, raising prices each time and building a waitlist with email and SMS. The key: reuse last year's assets, launch with scarcity messaging, and focus on engaged customers over list size.

So I'm loving all the YouTube watchers this morning. Look at y'all. Good morning, Lisa. Good morning, everybody. Good morning, Joni. Okay, here we go. So today I'm going to talk about this little guy, this little guy right here, um, that made $30K in 24 hours. And here's something that I want you to understand about this promotion. I have done this promotion consistently for 5 years. So the number one thing that I teach you is to be consistent, and that is so important. Be consistent on your social media, be consistent in your offers. You're training people, okay? This is another reason why I don't love discounts. We're training people that you always have a discount. We're training people that you always have a coupon. I don't love that because we are training our customers how to buy from us, how to act with us. And so when we do a promotion like this and we do it over and over and over again, we're training people to look forward to it each year. Okay. So here's what I want you to understand, how this promotion worked. And I talked about this promotion in both Launch Your Box and Scale Your Box in depth this month. In Launch Your Box, We went through 7 different promotions for the fourth quarter. This was my first one. I'm now working on the second one. Okay, so if you haven't watched the training from this month in Launch Your Box, I want you to go over and make sure that you block— it's like 30 minutes. It's like literally 20 minutes, actually. Block a little bit of time out today. Block yourself an hour on your calendar. I want you to go watch it. And then after it's done, I want you to sit and brainstorm those 7 promotions. Okay? Just, just knock it out. Just take some mental space for yourself. Then if you're a member of Scale Your Box, I went into a deep dive 2 weeks ago about this particular promotion we're going to talk about today. But I showed you assets, I gave you a checklist, I showed you all the things that I am using and doing. I showed you the funnel. So if you're in Scale Your Box, you can go through and look deeper, dive into this specific promotion. So that's your homework. If you're a Launch Your Box member, I want you to go watch the training and I want you to lay out your promotions. If you are a Scale Your Box member, I want you to go watch the Launch Your Box training and then I want you to go watch the Scale Your Box training where I deep dive into the holiday box promotion. And if you're not a member of either, we have opportunity right now for you to be a member. So if you're not in Launch Your Box and you want to join us, you can find us at launchyourbox.com. If you're in Launch Your Box and you're ready to scale, we have Scale Your Box open for the first time this week. It closes on Wednesday, so you can join either if you want to get in on there. So, and the team put a link right here if you want to join us in Launch Your Box if you're not a member. Listen, so much good stuff going on over in Launch Your Box and so much good stuff going on in Scale Your Box. So wherever you're at on your journey, I would love to be a part of that. But what I want to talk about today is I want to give you an overview of what I did for this promotion so that you could really understand how it's possible for you. It's, it's not hard. And the best thing about a promotion like this is once you do it and once you build your assets for it, it's just rinsing and repeating it. It's just taking this, rinse and repeat it. So here's what happened. So every year I do a holiday gift box, and that's what this one is. It is just a holiday gift box. We ship them, um, in December. You pre-order them in October so that I know what I'm working with, and then we ship them out in December, and they are gifted for Christmas Day. So they are not Christmas themed, they are everyday themed. So this would go under your Christmas tree or whoever is getting it, and then they open it Christmas Day. So I'm not making this Christmas themed, just the packaging is Christmas theme. And by the way, we made this packaging last year. We just rinse and repeat it. We don't have to recreate the wheel every single time we do this, okay? We're building assets that we can use again. So I want you to think about when you're designing a box like this, make it to where you can use it over and over again. It becomes recognizable. Oh my goodness, that's the Christmas box! Oh my goodness, that's the Christmas box! Like, they know that's the Christmas holiday gift box. Now, the first time I did this, I did a preorder. I took preorders and then I sold some more later. Second year I did the same thing. Third year I did the same thing. Last year, which was our fourth year, I sold out during our preorder in 5 days. I've created this habit with my customers. I am training them that every October I launch a preorder for our holiday gift box. They're waiting, they're ready, they know. So as the years went by, I was selling more and I was selling them quicker. So last year I sold out during my preorder. I had never sold out during a preorder before. So the first 3 years I did a preorder and I would sell maybe about half of them. I would order more and then I would sell the rest of them at the beginning of December. That's how it happened. Last year I sold out of everything that I had on order for this box in 5 days. So if you didn't order it, there was never— there was not an opportunity later to get the box. That was the first time that I sold out during a preorder. Last week I sold out in 24 hours during my preorder, the fastest I have ever sold out. It generated $30,000 for my business in one day. And now all we have to do is pack and ship these things. And it is so easy. But it's that consistency that I'm trying to show you. It's the consistency of showing up and doing the same thing over and over again. It's just like going live. Showing up that first time is really hard. Nobody's watching. You might have one viewer, it might be your mom. But when you show up again and you show up again, you get better at the lives. More people join the lives. Same thing with this box. I showed up, sold 50 my first year. I showed up again the next year and I tried to sell 100 and I got real close. The next year I ended up selling 150. Last year I sold 230. This year we sold out in 24 hours, over 300 gift boxes in 24 hours. I would have never shown up and tried to sell 300 of them the first time. I didn't know. It was brand new. I didn't know what to expect. But when you collect data over time because you're doing the same thing over and over again, you can say, okay, I sold out in 5 days, I need more. I had no idea I would sell out in 24 hours. Okay, so here's what we did. So every October we do this and I talk about it in that training in Launch Your Box. But the first thing we got to just sit down and do— that's a great question from Rainey. How much did you do the presale? It was like $40. So the first time I sold this, it was $40 because that's how much my subscription was. I didn't have— I didn't have a higher level subscription that first year that I did this. I just had one box. It was $40. You paid monthly and that's all I had when I very first did this. And so I made my box the same. It was $40. I thought if people are willing to spend $40 with me a month, they would buy a box for Christmas for $40. And that's where my mind was. It was great. Next year I went higher. Next year I went higher. This year we sold for $79 plus shipping. So I built a premium box because I've learned along the way that my customers want quality quality over quantity. And I brought some higher priced items into my shop over this year, and they, they're selling consistently. So based on my data that I've collected over the years, I knew I could push and go a little bit higher in price. And when I went higher in price, it allowed me to spend more on the products. So I got some really awesome items in this box this month, and they're going to be— not this month, this year. They're going to be blown away by the quality of this box. And so every year I just keep getting better, and that's what I want for you too. Every year I keep getting better. Okay, so here's what— here's how this worked. Sat down with Amber. Amber is my director of operations at the warehouse, and we sat down and we planned this box. Okay, what worked in the past years? What worked last year that made us sell out in 5 days? Well, for me last year, what worked— I told them the items that were in the box without showing them the items. So I said, okay, you're going to get a custom exclusive sweatshirt, you're going to get a custom exclusive t-shirt, and you're going to get, um, an accessory, and you're going to get a mystery item that's monogrammed. That was the box. And when we gave them an idea of what this box looked like, I think that that was the reason it sold out. It could be I've been building my audience. It could be that I've been so consistent with that people were just ready. But these are the things that I'm kind of analyzing before we go into this. So for this year, let's do the same thing. They love the sweatshirt, they love the t-shirt. Let's do the mystery items, one monogrammed, and we'll do the same thing because it works so well last year. If something is working, don't change it. Don't tweak too much stuff. I made those mistakes over the years of like, things are working really, really well, and then I get really creative in my creative mind. I think, oh, let's try something different, and it flops every time. Be consistent. Give them what they want. Understand their buying behaviors and keep serving that back up to them. I need you to analyze what worked well and do more of that, period. Okay, so we plan the box. Here's what's going to be in it. At that point, we start shopping. This is the beginning of October. I didn't— I knew I was going to do a holiday box. I just haven't— I didn't sit down and really think about what the box was going to be. Before the beginning of October. So we sit down, we plan it out, we start looking, we start shopping. Basically, we're getting with our vendors, we're trying to figure out what we're going to put in it. Um, I find some great items, we get stuff ordered, we know how many, um, boxes we're going to do this year. And also, um, I know my price point. So let's push the envelope a little bit. The second thing was to price the box. Here's what we priced it last year. Here's what was in it. I think we can push and go a little bit more of a premium price this year. I would love to go to $100 box, but I was afraid to jump to too high. So we went $79 this year plus shipping. So they'll pay shipping. And so we plan the box, we price the box. Now I'm locked and loaded. I know what my offer is. You cannot sell something until you know what your offer is. It doesn't mean that I had to have all the products here. It doesn't even— I don't even have with the sweatshirt even designed yet. It's just in my mind, okay? So I don't have to have it all figured out before I go and sell it. Understand that we get too wrapped up on everything being perfectly put together before I can actually go and sell it. I know who I am. I know I can create something really awesome. I do it every month for my business. I'm not worried about that. I'm going to get my offer set. I'm going to price it so that is very clear before I start to sell it. Then I need to plan my promotion. So what day will I launch the box? How long will the cart be open for pre-order? What, what am I— what activities am I going to do during the launch? Okay, so I need to sit down and plan out that promotion. Now we set the date on the calendar. It was last Thursday. This is going to be the day we launch our box. We'll do a live. Here's our email campaigns. This is what we're going to set up. And I teach all of that in Scale Your Box, like what I did for all of those campaigns and how many emails I sent and how many lives and all of that things. But I got to end my promotion early because it sold out in 24 hours. So I didn't have to do a traditional 5-day launch. I was done. It was awesome. But what I needed to do before that launch is I needed to create anticipation. And this is what we fail to do sometimes. We fail to create the anticipation for what's coming, and we just lob something out there. Well, if I'm gonna start talking about it, let's go sell it. We need to create the buildup. We need to create the FOMO. We need to create that anticipation that something is coming. So the minute that I had my box plan, I had my price figured out, I had my offer together, and then what day I was going to drop it, it was time to start seeding that something was coming, like a save the date. So I had to build a waitlist page. I built a landing page with an embed form with an email flow on the back of it. Okay, so that was the technical pieces that I needed to make the waitlist happen. Then that same week that I just figured out the box and the price and when we were going to launch it, I start talking about it immediately. Now I have a 2-week window where I can drive people to my waitlist and build. I'm just collecting people. I'm collecting people that are telling me they're interested in this box. We don't collect people enough. We just think we should show up and sell them. I'm building the anticipation. Here's the other great thing: because I did this last year, and I did it the year before, and I did it the year before, I had a waitlist full of people that told me all those previous years they were interested. So I had a waitlist that wasn't starting at zero. I had about 554 names on this waitlist. It doesn't sound like a lot, but those are people that are highly interested, and those people have probably bought one of my gift boxes in the past. So I left them on that waitlist. I didn't scrub that. I left them. At some point over the last 4 years, they told me they were interested in buying this box. Left them on there. Now I had 2 weeks to promote it and build that more. I got 200 more new people on the waitlist over those 2 weeks, and I also built a text waitlist. So I set up a keyword in my texting app that was just said gift, and people could text me the word gift if they wanted a text when these went live, or you got an email or a text, or I had a lot of people sign up for both. They did not want to miss it. Okay, so I'm building the anticipation. I'm talking about it every time I turn around. If I'm live, I'm mentioning, hey, we've got the box waitlist. Our holiday boxes are coming soon. I did it during the live while I'm selling other things. I did it during my live unboxing of our October box. We did static posts talking about the waitlist. So over that 2-week time period, I'm mentioning it multiple times, driving people to the waitlist so I can collect them. Because they are telling me they are interested. They are my hottest leads at this point. Okay, we gotta build that funnel. Okay, so now been talking about the waitlist for 2 weeks. Now it's coming up, it's launch week. I'm gonna launch on Thursday, which means everybody on that waitlist is going to know before launch day, and that's the perk. And that's what I was telling them. Hey, if you get on this waitlist, whether it's text or email, you're going to get the link to buy these the day before everyone else. That's the benefit. Why would I get on this waitlist? What is the benefit for me? Any time we ask someone to give our— to give us their email or their phone number for SMS or whatever, what's the benefit to them? The benefit of them taking 2 minutes to go to my landing page and sign up on my opt-in form is that they were going to get to shop this before everyone else. They were going to get to work on to, to purchase theirs before it went to the masses. That's the benefits. You got to sell the benefits. Wasn't just getting on my email list. Get on this waitlist so that you get first dibs. Okay, so the email went out on Wednesday. To everyone that was on the waitlist, everyone that was new on the waitlist, and everyone from previous years. So all 750 people. And then it also went to my text list, which had about, there was about 80 people on the text list, okay, that had signed up for the text reminder. So went out to 80 people on text, it went out to 750 people in the email, and we sold over half of our boxes. To that little pool of people. Well, in the grand scheme of things, that little tiny pool of people bought over half of my gift boxes. And this is why this is important, and I say this a lot, but I need you to really hear me when I say this. We don't have to have tens of thousands of people We don't. We need the right people. We need the right people because 750 people converted like crazy because they were the right people. They were the buyers. They were the ones that were the most loyal. They know, like, and trust me. They're my people. The minute they heard me say get on the waitlist, They're like, I'm in, let's do this. I know I want that box. I don't need thousands of people on that list to sell hundreds of boxes because my conversion rate on those people is so much higher because they're the right people. Don't think you have to have a ton of people. They just need to be the right people. So sent that out. Sold half. So exciting. I was like, whoa, this is crazy. So now I'm going to go live. It's launch day. So now it's Thursday. I'm going to go live. I'm like, I'm here. I got the box. I'm telling about all the things. I'm talking as if you've never heard of this before. I'm breaking it down to the brand new person and I'm saying, hey, and by the way, y'all get on this because we sold over half of them overnight to our waitlist. If y'all want a Christmas box, do not sit on it because we're already sold over half of them. I'm creating the urgency. I'm creating the scarcity. I'm creating that fear of missing out with them. And, you know, in any launches that you have, we have to create the reason for people to buy. If I said you can buy these from now until December 5th, You think people would show up and buy them today? No, there's no reason. There's no reason for people to go buy them today. You have to give them a reason not to procrastinate. My reason was they're selling fast, the pre-order ends soon, over half are gone. Like, I was creating the urgency, and then I continued to do that the rest of the day. Okay, I was continuing to do that the rest of the day. So we had posts about how quickly they were selling. Um, I even did a post, um, when I saw that we had only 40 boxes left, I did a post that said only 40 boxes left, creating that urgency. I sent an email out that said— that day— that said over 300 boxes sold, we're almost out. At that point, I had less than 20 boxes when that email went out. That was later on in the day, and they were done within an hour of me sending that email out. So what I need you to understand is that you might not sell out and make $30K the first time you do this. I sure didn't. I didn't. It takes a long-term goal, long-term planning. If this is a goal that you would like to have in the next couple of years, we have to start now. And that might mean 50 boxes for you this year. It might mean 20 boxes for you this year. But everything that you're building this year is an asset that you can use next year. All of our graphics were from last year because I used the same box. Literally, I took one picture of this box and we made a series of graphics, like 12 of them off of one picture of the box. I have the assets. I've already created this design. I'm going to use it year after year. I've already created the graphics. I'm going to use those year after year. I've already created the emails. It's rinse and repeat. I went into Klaviyo, I pulled the emails from last year, updated them, and sent them again. I'm not creating this from scratch every year. And that's the beauty of doing these promotions and locking them in. You're building assets that you can rinse and repeat. Your customers are being trained on your offers and when to buy. And as we're training our customers, we're going to sell more and more and more, and it's going to get bigger and better for you every single year. I love this takeaway: be consistent, know and find your right people, create urgency and FOMO. It's all it is. We overthink this in our head because we think everything has to be perfect before we do it. We have to have some proven thing that we can do it. If you haven't planned a holiday box, you still have time. What are you doing today? Sit down and plan your box, plan the price, plan the promotion, build your waitlist. There's still time. It's October 23rd. We got a lot of time. Be consistent with it. Don't keep reinventing it every year. You just have to rinse and repeat it, and we get better. We get better at knowing what people want in that box. We get better at being able to promote it effectively. Just like that waitlist, I didn't start from scratch. I had 550 people on it from previous years that told me they wanted to know about my box. Why wouldn't they want to know again this year? Of course they're going to want to know again this year. I could also have pulled emails of everyone that purchased a box the last 4 years and put those in there too if I wanted to, but I didn't. I didn't need to. Everything sold out. And I didn't have it all figured out. I still don't have the design done for it, but it's going to be okay because I know I can do that. We do things messy, we do things imperfect all the time, but the problem is we, we hold ourselves back because we think it has to be perfect all the time before we can actually do something. If you do that, you're going to be sitting on a lot of ideas that never get out into the world. Give yourself permission to make it messy. I see a question from Amy. Hey Amy, your box is DIY. What would you do for a holiday gift box? I end up stumped on this one. Would it be a DIY project with supply list and video tutorials for someone who loves to craft? I think you'd have to show the craft. Crafting projects are a big variable when selling. I think you very much could show the craft. For me, my audience is different. They want the gift surprise. I think this would be a great, um, like everyday item that— and you would spin it as a couple things. Here's the benefits, Amy. You're taking down all of your holiday decorations. Your decor is going to look blah. Let's freshen up your space with this DIY gift box for the holidays. Here's the other benefit. You're going to have downtime. Everybody has this weird downtime between Christmas and New Year's. Do something for yourself. Take time for yourself during that period after all the holidays are done and everything's cleaned up and put away. Take some time to do something for yourself. Here's a crafting project that you can use in your house year-round. I think those are the benefits of having a DIY project. Okay, plan the box, price the box, plan the promotion, build your list, sell it, and then do everything for this promotion in a way that you can rinse and repeat it. It's not too late. Let's go, let's get this started. Even if it's 20. What could 20 boxes do for your business right now? I guarantee you 90% of the people that bought these holiday gift boxes from me were subscribers. They're buying one for themselves, they're buying one for their mom, their sister, their best friend. Guarantee that's the customer that's buying them. All right, let's go, let's make some extra revenue. Buying habits are changing. Let's capitalize on it. Get your holiday box out there. I'll see you guys soon.
