Sarah Williams explains why subscription box sellers should collect customer preferences like color, scent, and size at checkout instead of asking later. Manual follow-ups don't scale and get ignored as your subscriber base grows. Use Shopify apps or WooCommerce plugins to capture this data upfront.

The first thing that I want you to understand with variables is that you've got to capture the data at checkout. So at checkout, you've got to get this information. You don't want to have to follow up with people. It might be fine if you have 20 subscribers or maybe even 50 subscribers, but when you start to grow higher than that, it's not fine. You don't have the time to do this and you're going to follow up with people over and over and over again because they won't respond. Even 20 people, you're not going to get all 20 people to respond. And so what I want you to understand is that we have to have a way to capture this at our checkout screen. And you can do this with lots of different ways. If you're on Shopify, you can do this with apps. If you're on WooCommerce, you can do this with plugins, but you wanna have that checkout screen where they can put in the variable information that you need. Aside from an upgrade, if I'm giving somebody a color palette, if I'm giving someone a scent family, if I'm giving someone a size option, we wanna capture that right at checkout.
