What's the number one thing that business people need to start doing or stop doing so that they can improve their communication skills? Today I caught up with Diana Swillinger, a recognized authority on public speaking and creator of the Renew youw Mind podcast, and here's what she said.
The number one thing people need to stop doing when they get in front of an audience is trying to teach them. When you try to teach people something in the audience, you might be positioning yourself as someone who knows better than they do, and you end up creating distance between them as you're some expert beyond them. You don't connect, you don't want to do anything more with them. Instead of teaching people something, what you need to do from the stage is offer value. You need to tell them things that will help elevate their life, elevate their business. Give them something practical and tangible they can do that will go add value in their business, in their projects, in their personal life. Right away, don't teach them anything. Give them something valuable to take with them when they walk out the door.
