Short video clip (Day 85 of a 100-day series) in which the speaker discusses the concept of the “Valley of Despair” during habit formation. The speaker cites Atomic Habits and describes an early enthusiasm phase followed by a dip (around 20–50 days), arguing that persisting through this valley (e.g., sticking to 100-day commitments) produces breakthroughs and durable habits.

But the biggest lesson I learned in those seasonal transformations is there's a thing called the Valley of Despair. Also in one of the great books like Atomic Habits, yes, you start out something, could be a new workout plan, and almost immediately you feel kind of jazzed that you're going through this new workout plan. You feel pretty good. You feel sore, but you feel good. But then around 20, 30, 40 days or 50 days, somewhere in there, sort of plateaus, not only do you level off, but you actually start to dip. And when you're leveling off and you start to dip and you still have the strength, the courage, the wisdom to continue on, and you see there's a significant breakthrough, somebody says something, you get that call from the client, you get that break that you never would have gotten. 100 days allows you to go through those seasons, get through at least 1, 2, 3, or even 4 values of despair, and literally commit you to these habits that become part of you.
