Fishing Story

A first-person anecdote (Lake Tahoe pier) in which the speaker—at about nine years old—observes several fishermen with empty buckets and one old man with full buckets. The old man uses a direct, pragmatic technique to hook fish; the speaker’s father interprets the scene as an early entrepreneurship lesson about perspective and motivation (fishing to feed a family vs. casual fishing).

I got my first lesson of entrepreneurship when I was about nine years old. I was in Lake Tahoe with my dad, and we took an early morning walk out onto a pier where there were some people fishing. And as we passed the first two or three fishermen, they all had empty buckets and a ton of excuses. I'll never forget. One of the guys was talking about how the water was crystal clear so that the fish could actually see them, and because they could see them, they weren't biting. And the second guy was complaining that, as you can see, the fish down at the bottom, which wasn't very deep, but the fish were down at the bottom, and they were fat and they were unmoving, and they were just unmotivated by the bait. And since they got there a little bit late, you know, they couldn't catch any fish on or on it went, right? But by the end of the pier, there was this old man. As we approached him, we could see two or three buckets just full of fish. And both of us, my dad and I, were super, super into it. Just like, I wonder what he's doing. As we came up behind him, he didn't see us behind him, but we saw him do something very, very different. Rather than putting bait on the hook, he lowers the hook down, and it's crystal clear water right beside one of the fat, unmoving fish. And instead of hooking him in the mouth with bait, he just lowered the hook down and yanked it and hooked the fish right on the side, pulled it up right out of the water, dropped it in the bucket. And that vision stuck with me. And as my dad and I were walking back to the house, he turned to me and said, what do you make of that? That's pretty cool, right? Yeah. Yeah. That guy was just full of fish. It was crazy. And he said, do you know the difference between the two? Difference between the two. Two what? Said, you know, the guys were fishing without any fish, and the guy had the full buckets. Said, no, I was nine years old. I said, I don't know. He said, there were some guys with the empty buckets. They were fishing. But the guy with the full buckets, the old man, he was clearly feeding his family. And there's a different psychology, there's a different approach. You see things differently.
