A short personal vlog-style reflection by Scott Empringham describing how he overslept during a scheduled bike trip in Porto, Portugal, felt initially frustrated, then turned the day around by making the ride playful—encouraging spontaneous burpee sets at stops (about 100 total)—and attributing the mindset shift to Stoic ideas from the book 'How to Think Like a Roman Emperor' (Marcus Aurelius) about having a deliberate 'second reaction' to impulses.

I don't know about you, but sometimes it is hard to accomplish goals. It is really difficult to stick with goals. This morning was no exception. I'm here in beautiful Porto, Portugal, and today we had a great bike ride trip all scheduled. And I overslept. I never oversleep, but I overslept. My body just needed it. And I missed my workout, missed my whole morning routine. And on the bike ride trip, I was kind of in this pissy mood. I didn't really know why, although I kind of didn't know why. I thought, well, there's no way to get a workout done, maybe when I get back and all that stuff. And I thought, wait a second, let me have some fun with this. And every time we stopped to take pictures, I decided to encourage the kids. And we ended up doing like 10, 15, 20 burpees. And by the time we were done, we ended up doing about 100 burpees. And people were cheering us on, clapping, laughing, and we had some fun with it. And it reminded me of a book I'm reading called how to Think Like a Roman Emperor. A book about Marcus Aurelius and how he talks about how we have a first reaction fantasiae to something. It might just be an impulse reaction. And then if we're deliberate about it, we think about it, we can have a second reaction to it. We look at it a little bit differently. And he called that tsumkat. That's soon get that thesis or something. That's exactly what happened. I got immediate reaction. Crap, never going to be able to get this done. And a second reaction. I'm so grateful for those second reactions. We had a great day, got the workout done and wanted to share that. If you have initial reaction, don't worry about it, let it pass and have a soon katadisis. Have a second one.
